SOTD w/c Sat 24Mar - Fri 30 Mar...

After the usual 1-2 minute hot towel prep;

old Marshall Fields badger
Gem 1912 'Damaskene'/Gem
Surrey SS (pre VDH reformulation)
Barbershop Bay Rum AS
Paloma Picasso 'Minotaure' EdT

First time trying one of these goofy SE things. Yeah, all the enabling bastards here finally wore me out....BUM (as Slimbo's mom says regularly).

Way too early to give any kinda informed review....this first shave a 'getting to know your SE' sorta thing. The angle and pressure are the keys here and no problem figuring it out if I go slowly. Heh, this thing did shave me pretty darn close, which tells me it'll get even better once I know what's up. I was pleased to see no red spots at all in my lather this morning.

BBS results,

Martin

Feel-good shave BBS for a sunny Sunday morning. Could feel a bonus point for Tigers in the air!

SUNDAY EVENING

Gillette 'Black Beauty' set to 5 (birth year razor)
Gillette Super Stainless
Cade soap (tin lathered)
Beejay amber acrylic
Witch hazel
Trumper lime skin food

First go with the Superslim. It's a cracker, though the handle takes some getting used to.

About fourth go with the Cade and I think I've had enough of it. It is a real disappointment for me. Perhaps a trade may be in order?

It is odd. I wonder what's different for you than the rest of us? Maybe a rare duff cake?

God knows! We have really soft water here so it isn't that.

If I compare it to say, a Tabac stick, I can really feel the difference in cushioning. The biggest disappointment is I have to really load the brush for each pass, and even then it's not great.

Perhaps, as you say, I have a duff un.

Time of shave: some time today, can't remember exact time-still in shock!!

Equipment: 2 or 3 straights and a plastic shavette thingy in black ,I think it's japanese! Decided to go all Proraso, pre-shave cream, shave cream, the pre for post and lotion..

I watched the videos on utube and thought .....I'm ready-y-y. I have been collecting straights for a little while and decided it was the right time etc..

...cut myself up some. The razors weren't sharp enough even though I had a go at pre stropping. Looking in the mirror part way through I saw a guy looking back who had been in the ring with some other guy who really, really, knew how to head punch - with accuracy! Think I need to get myself a good honing stone and look at a few more vids.

Not exactly a bbs shave, more a css,(cut, slash & survive).

Far too quickly, Ian...

So, today's shave was interesting for two reasons:

1. T&H almond shaving cream sample
2. First time with a feather blade

This is the first T&H cream that I dislike the smell of - to me it's sickly sweet and generally unpleasant. I won't be purchasing this - but that's the purpose of sample packs, I guess. I did get a lovely rich lather though, so positive in that regard.

I used the blade in a Gillette Super Adjustable. I usually set this to 5 when using with a Derby, so I decided to do so again. 3 passes (with, across and against.) The shave felt smooth when doing it - but the Alum block told a different story. Now feeling very tender... I guess I should have made it a lot more mild for the XTG / ATG passes.

Any recommendations for settings?

Cheers
Stu
