Proraso Week Day 2

Much better experience than yesterday's trial face-lathering. Back to the bowl and back to consistent mountains of great lather.
Shave was much easier thanks to better lather today. Replacing Proraso ASL with Skin food + ASB meant not such a long lasting menthol hit which was an improvement on yesterday.

Getting use to the Slim again and so getting better/closer shave. Result DFS.

Proraso Week Day 1

I have not tried face-lathering with a cream before, so I thought this'd be a good opportunity. Applied shave cream to my face in patches then worked up a lather with a medium wet brush. First pass was ok, but started to run out of lather from the brush by the second pass and by the third was having to apply more cream to my face.

I don't really get the pleasure of face-lathering. The brush feels cold after the first pass, it's difficult to get consistent lather for each pass and it feels like I'm scrubbing my face off (even though it didn't actually make my face sore).

You know, I used a bowl to make up the lather for years before finally getting smart and trying the face lather thing. I'm sorry it took me so long to figure out what works best.

Sounds like you didn't get the lather worked into your brush well enough, so maybe try something different. Take some cream and about 1 tablespoon of very hot water and throw it in a bowl to sit. Leave it for a minute or two, which will help the soap dissolve into the water.

Give your soaking brush a much stronger shake out than usual and work that mix in the bowl for 10-15 seconds. The idea is to deeply charge the brush before going to your face. Make sure the cream isn't clumped up on the brush.

If you rinse your face with hot water between passes, that should keep the lather from getting cold.

See if that helps,

Martin

Thanks for the advice Martin, will give it a try. Seems a bit like cheating though using a bowl for face lathering.

Notes: A good, clean result with little sting. Razor wasn't easy to use, as it had no jimps and a thin tang. Nonetheless, it shaved very well.

Soap: MdC (only the best is good enough for this brush :))
AS: Pinuad Clubman

Result: Uberclean :D Usually I save this soap for smaller brushes, but it was a great combo and the razor's easy one of the top Solingen blades produced, ever :D

Product of the week (Proraso) shave 2

Confiança Redondo pre-shave soap
Hot flannel prep with Proraso eucalyptus and menthol pre/post
Muhle Silvertip Fibre Version 1 (21 mm knot)
Proraso eucalyptus and menthol cream, face-lathered
Edwin Jagger DE89L
Supermax Super Stainless (not sure how many shaves)
Nivea Sensitive ASB
Floris Eau de Santal EdT

3 passes plus touch-ups - DFS result.

Today I decided to test the Proraso with a less-than-ideal setup. I find the Muhle brush fine when face-lathering after loading from a puck, or when I've rubbed a Tabac stick on my face but, when dabbing cream from the tube on my face, the need to get the brush quite dry (to prevent water flying out of it as I lather) brought-out the scratchy nature of the older generation Muhle fibres. Add to that a blade type I'm using-up in the least bad razor for it (the same blades in my other razors are awful), and the result was a weeper and some irritation. Having said that, the Proraso got me almost as close as on Sunday with a much better setup, and without too much redness or blood, which is impressive indeed.

Hot flannel
Proraso pre, green
Simpsons Colonel X2L, T&H 1805 cream
Weber polished, Personna Red (3)
Cold splash, alum block
Clinique post-shave soother

I was going to give the Gillette Slim another go today, but I'd had rather a bad day... so I went for the totally smooth and trouble-free option of my FrankenWeber. Result: totally smooth and trouble-free

This morning:

Prep: Cold rinse
Razor: G Towa T 6/8"
Brush: Simpson Duke 3 in two-band best
Soap: Proraso green

A rather nice shave. Kept it to two passes again and was none the worse for it, I think.
