Could be that you are going against the grain on the neck without realising.

Good idea to have a good feel around, work out which way the hair grows and follow that direction when shaving - even if that ends up being in one big circle.

"Beard Mapping".

Actually I'm going against the grain *with* realising - I've been beard mapping and three-pass shaving for as long as I can remember, never occurred to me not to. I've always needed at least one ATG pass on neck and jawline to get a shave I consider acceptably close. I know people advise you not to when you start with DE, but I'm not great at that sort of restraint tbh and I didn't want to be picking up a cartridge to finish the shave every night.

My beard is actually relatively simple - it pretty much grows from my right ear to my left ear everywhere outside my goatee, except for just under the corners of my jaw.

The comment and advice is much appreciated btw, and more advice from all is solicited!

Tonight

Hot shower
TOBS lemon and lime, bowl lathered
New Forest Tubby 2 brush
EJ DE89, Boots blade (1)
KoS balm

Lather even better now, helped even further by rereading Antdad's hard soap thread and lathering a bit longer - this stuff looked exactly right and felt great. New blade definitely felt much smoother and cleaner, and I was almost finished in three passes - just minor touchups needed, where as last night I needed more like four and a half passes. Now I know what blunt feels like, I think, which is a worthwhile learning experience.

Tonight's shave was the best yet in every regard. Extremely clean, totally comfortable, very enjoyable, absolutely no internal fluids released.

I'll carry the EJ through the weekend until it feels like it's blunting again and then probably try the HD - or maybe the slimtwist. Which is likely to be milder, I wonder?

Thursday

5/8 Rauh Gebruder
Nanny's The Spicy One cream
Kent BK4
Boots Essentials AS Balm
Tesco All About Men Cool AS

Stupidly lost grip on the razor when I was about to strop it after the shave and it dropped onto my stone-tiled bathroom floor. I was horrified, but thankfully there was only the slightest ding on the edge of the point which I honed out straight away. Phew!

Slimtwist is milder, if I recall correctly.

I must say, Hermits shaves are superb in their variety, they are becoming legendary!

Where do you find all this stuff? All online or are you blessed with an immense array of grooming outlets locally?

It's almost entirely 'online sourced', Jack.
        • Many hours of Goblin Clan and Pixie Horde labour, has been spent in canvassing the fragile ecosystem of the internet - strong-arming dragons, shaking down ogres, and committing indecent acts with mermaids that would make unicorn-porn traffickers blush from embarrassment and shock - and all of it just to find me my shaving shtuffs. • Aye, sadly, compared to most photogs posting here, that would put me perhaps in the third-string of the Remedial Juniors' League, at best.[/list:u][/list:u][/list:u]

                :?
                • Ta, verily and forsooth, and such for the recognition though, chaps![/list:u]

PS: The blade stuck to the end of the razor handle, isn't trick photography.
                          • ... And it isn't magic, nor a miracle - it's science-based wonderment.[/list:u][/list:u][/list:u][/list:u][/list:u]

Funny that, this is the kind of blade I'd at least try to hone without tape, though the chances of the edge crumbling are high. I'm impressed.

Friday: a rare morning shave for me.

EJ de89bl, loaded with a Gillette Super Thin (1)
Nanny's Lime Silly Soap

Three passes, w, a, x. No touch-ups, happy with a good enough for work shave today.

FInished off with some spanish Floid Vigoroso. Nice.
Hi Mikael, what blades do those interesting razors take pls?
Hi Michael! As Konstantinos wrote,: for the Ever Ready those SE blades., but for the Heljestrand I use special Heljestrand made hollow ground blades (very good construction and you hone them, I got a load of NOS ones :D).
