Edinburgh - a conveniently located hotel

Fido, I think an apartment is absolutely the way to go. Hwmom and I just started a few years ago using self catering cottages when we go to Ireland, rather than B & Bs, and I for one much prefer to be able to slob around in a home from home, than having to go and ask for provisions to make another cup of coffee with UHT (AKA UGH!) milk. I use hotels quite often when I travel with work, and absolutely don't see what the money is paying for. A room with no facilities apart from a bath room and a bar that if it was in your home town you would certainly never go to. Obviously, I'm considerably down market from your price league, but nonetheless, I much prefer the privacy and ability to make a cup of tea with tea bags of your choice, and proper coffee in a cafetiiere, with a full sized kettle and real milk, and have different rooms so that if one wants to watch telly late, the other can sleep, and lighting a real fire (o.k. you're probably not going to be doiing that in your apartment)....but so much better in every way. And on the rare occasion when I have stayed in pricier hotels, I don't find the staff any friendlier or more helpful than in a Holiday Inn....they just wear posher suits.
Hope you and Mrs. F have a great time in Edinburgh!

Thanks Sharon

We found a place that really suits us within a short walk of Princes St. Fingers crossed! Hoping too that the volcano behaves itself.

After a walk along Princes Street Peter you must take your wife to lunch at :

Thanks beejay

All this publicity! I'll be wearing dark glasses on arrival. The suggestion sounds good. What's the place actually called and what is the Princes St address? Couldn't quite figure it out from the link.

Down along the Shore in Leith is lovely for waterside pubs & amazing restaurants too.

And I live there too, which makes it an even better place.... ;)

How time flies. I started this thread on 4 December when I was asking for tips about a conveniently located hotel in Edinburgh for 3/4 nights. Here I am on 2 June settled in for a 7 night stay. I ended up in a boutique hotel from where it took us 7 minutes to walk to the Castle last night. Great value compared with a typical hotel suite - my daughter found it for us. Plenty of room for the laptop:

The Scots have been very friendly. So far.
