February 2021 Acquisitions

@donnie_arko I've still got the Passaround Fatboy here, and a couple of other Gillettes (tech and slim twist) so hopefully I'll be happy. Out of interest, what the hell is "New Sputtered Blade Technology":giggle:

Sputtering is how they get the platinum onto the edge to harden it.

To be absolutely fair, their older generation Super Platinum is a lovely blade. I can feel that the new generation of platinum across the range is different, but I can also very much feel its legacy. While the range is confusing at best, at worst it's a mess, but if the packaging is "zappy" and full of buzzwords, it's the latest generation from what I can tell.

Every day's a school day! Thanks @pjgh (y)

@Jester ... you can see from the blurb that they mention chromium and DLC (the black coating you see on some modern straights), but platinum and titanium is done this way. The way I understand it is, you take a stainless blank, sputter a harder metal onto the very edge, grind, strop and teflon coat. You get a blade that won't dull quite as quickly and hopefully delivers a more consistent set of shave across the life of the blade.

At bloody last! My "lost in Brexit" parcel from Razor Blades Club ordered in December and went AWOL on the fateful date of 31/12/2020 after leaving Germany has finally arrived! In the meantime, they refunded with no quibble and sent me a second (albeit slightly different) parcel out which arrived within 5 days. I'll check whether they want me to pay for it as they may well have got compensation from their postal service, but suffice to say I've got a surplus of blades ...

I think it's time we started a fresh blade passabout and this could form a good starting point.

I've been on the lookout for a Flying Eagle tin for a while, and this popped up on Ebay with razor and mirror in situ. And just to compound my rapidly growing cupboard, it brought along a 1912 for company :giggle: No idea what the third razor is.
The pic is from the actual listing page, so I'll wait to see the condition. Connaught's out of stock of Gem blades, so I'll probably clean it up and admire it while I wait. Still got plenty of DE blades to try with my existing safety razors!

They're a nice bit of fun, those Flying Eagle razors @Jester ... good catch! The third razor is a generic Trac-II type. The cartridge will slide off sideways. The 1912 is late 1940s/turn of the 1950s, sold as the DeLuxe model in bakelike clamshell cases.

Thanks for the info @pjgh - that's amazing. I assume the Flying Eagle will be some sort of Tech clone? Shame the Ever Ready's not boxed, but the price I paid lets me have a go once I can get the blades without significant outlay if it's not for me.

@Boycie83 I'll probably wait and pick up a smaller initial amount to see if the 1912's a goer for me to be honest. I'm sure I'll "need" some other stuff soon enough to make ordering worthwhile :)

Yep! I am hazy on the history, but they are eastern Gillette Tech clones. I believe Gillette now own their factory (in Shanghai?) and that's the Gillette Shanghai blade factory today. Can someone confirm that?

Deluxes? Ner, ner!!! :p

Received today as a gift from the very generous @Mike Smart, thank you Mike, it's a wonderful gift.

Paul.
Just noticed on the lid, Boots have been trading since 1877, that must be one of the oldest traders in the UK..... Nice gift by the way
Edit
Crockett & Jones are two years later 1879. Well done Boots
