Sotd - Saturday 10/3/18

Razor - Schick O Type Clone
blade - Japanese twin (lost count)
brush - Chubby 2 best
soap - RazoRock Puro - tallow
post - witch hazel
a/s - Extro Tabbaco
balm - BBA
scent - Creed Tabarome parfum.

Result - top end.

Thanks to work this week - taking off four days growth. Needed to be best presentable - me and my other half meeting my oldest friend in the world and his Mrs for lunch - so a haircut - my usual Turkish barber wasn't open so I tried the Iraqi one across the road, god bless Govanhill - never knowingly under cultured - and a shave - find a shirt that wasn't made by Rohan. This razor is an obvious choice if you want to be bbs but without any chance of claret being spilled. This was no time to take the risk of cutting yourself up a treat. @mpf9ret - Mike if you haven't yet tried the razor with a twin - I would recommend it. In my experience it's good with a single but even better with a twin. Went for a tobacco theme with the software - a favourite for me. For an aftershave the Extro has longevity and dovetails nicely with the Creed Tabarome. Job done and off to lunch - my friend's wife is South African - of English and Dutch extraction - educated in Afrikaans - her first among the many languages she speaks. What an accent - I'd always wondered why I had never heard of an Afrikaans poet. I know why now. She quoted some - it was a bit like Vogon poetry - if you get the 'Hitch Hikers' reference -

"Oh freddled gruntbuggly,
Thy micturations are to me
As plurdled gabbleblotchits on a lurgid bee.
Groop, I implore thee, my foonting turlingdromes,
And hooptiously drangle me with crinkly bindlewurdles,
Or I will rend thee in the gobberwarts
With my blurglecruncheon, see if I don't!"

Obviously it wasn't the same - I can't understand Afrikaans - but it sounded a bit the same. Lots of sounded glottal fricatives. We had an excellent lunch - enjoy your shaves - yours - I.

I'm a big fan of Vogon poetry, I'm also a huge fan of your countryman William McGonagall:

  • A chicken is a noble beast,
    The cow is much forlorner;
    Standing in the pouring rain,
    With a leg at every corner.
So bring on the Afrikaans poetry please.

My favourite McGonagall -

'Beautiful silvery Tay,
With your landscapes, so lovely and gay,
Along each side of your waters, to Perth all the way;
No other river in the world has got scenery more fine,
Only I am told the beautiful Rhine,
Near to Wormit Bay, it seems very fine,
Where the Railway Bridge is towering above its waters sublime.'

And another favourite - Byron on Castlereagh - his long time foe -

'Posterity will ne'er survey,
A nobler grave than this:
Here lie the bones of Castlereagh:
Stop, traveller, and piss.'

Ha ha ha - I.

@Barry Giddens

Two fine examples of not so classic poetry.

Castlereagh what a contrary changeable character he was, oh I forgot he was a politician :D
