Soap Makers challenge - Imperial Leather (IL) shaving soap.

Re: Soap Makers challenge - Imperial Leather (IL) shaving so

I recently picked up a NOS set of IL shaving soap (in bowl) and talcum powder but I can't seem to bring myself to try it as it is probably 50's or 60's and it seems a shame.

You only live once KRF, and I don't think it'll improve with age. Why not wait for a special day and just do it ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4pppHD7HNQ&feature=fvst

Audio lectures of an old college friend Will Andrews who is a scent assessor for P&G.

Apologies in advance for the daft question.

The soap makers say that Imperial Leather smell of nothing special, just soap. Are you sure that you are sampling from the original flavour, and not the sensitive or deodorising versions which smell of nothing in particular, just soap?

To me the Original soap has a definite Leather scent.

I agree with you but then what does soap actually smell like? It's difficult for the untrained nose to actually define but we all know or at least we think we do. We will just have to wait and see what the soap makers come up with.

I think that when we said that it smells of soap, we actually mean that it smells of the type of perfume you'd expect in a classic soap, rather than something special, classy, imperial, leathery or otherwise. Of course it doesn't smell of unscented soap - that is just a musty, unattractive smell, and any fragrance will do to hide that ;-)

Tbh if your'e an "assessor" it means your nose isn't really good enough to be a proper perfumer (500 or so worldwide) or even a perfume chemist who may have chemically synthesised their nasal passages with Jif. There is certainly an element of eau' de betty swollocks in the air but I suppose that's why they employ the fella.

OMG; I've been prompted to return to this subject, and have to admit that Metric Polyvinyl is not even a work in progress. But I'll do what I can, and hope that when I send it moments before the deadline, RM may have recovered from its recent trials and it will fall into Antdad's hands with moments to spare.
Hoping for a few points for performance of soap if nothing else. As for leather.....I'm starting to get ideas.......which is good, as the lack of leather essential oil had me a bit worried for a while.

And there is no such thing as a leather essential oil, or even an idea of what constitiutes leather scent. All true leather-like fragrances rely on chemicals unrelated to leather for effect; usually tar-derived, or tar-like. Cade oil (oil derived from the dry distillation of certain juniper species - not even remotely related to the scent of Cade soap...) is a tried and true, early leather component.

It seems that none of can actually state what IL actually smells like :?

So this should be quite interesting, smells are so subjective to the individual anyway.

Re: Soap Makers challenge - Imperial Leather (IL) shaving so

A fresh cake of Tabac and a fresh bar of IL do have that slightly bitter, leather note going on to my nose, but this does fade and mellow with use.
