Birth razors, Who's got them, who's looking?

Has anyone got something from the 4th Quarter 1948?

Hi there,

Back then I believe there were no date codes on Gillette razors, but there is a way to sometimes narrow things down to some degree. For this you need the original case and blade holder for that particular razor. Yeah, the Gillette blades are all dated, even during the 1940s, and that's a good way to be pretty sure of the razor's age.

Here, I'll give you a good example of what I'm talking about. I've got a boxed 1940s type superspeed with everything included. No date on the razor, but the blade holder has blades dated U2 (second quarter of 1949). Not only that, but when I bought this set there was one of those blades still in the razor. In this case, I'd bet money the razor was made in the same year and quarter as those blades.

Hope that helps somehow,

Martin

Oh yeah, what you're looking for is something that's dated T4.

Best I manged to locate for my own 1940s birth razor was an open comb "Maw " of London travel razor in a falling apart leather pouch. It is ex military & came with 2 ancient Wilkinson Sword blades.
