best make of tent?

Oh it was a pitched battle between some snazzy single pole job (Bell or Tentipi, my choice) or a Vango (the wife's preference).

In the end, after some research, reviews etc I went for the Vango Icarus 600 DLX @ £220

Thanks for all your help -- the comments and suggestions very very useful in refining my thinking.

I'll let you know how it goes . . . :)

Looks like a good call for a family tent. Have you got the rest of the kit? Stoves, cookware, sleeping mats, sleeping bags.....

Travel razor

KNIVES, AXES!

There's loads more you can inflict on your wife!

BTW, "the comments and suggestions very very useful in refining my thinking" seems frighteningly "Yes Minister"-ish. Appropriate I guess although you are the wrong sort of minister.

Cheers,

You should have said... <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.marshallleisure.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=31_250_32&products_id=146875" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.marshallleisure.co.uk/index. ... _id=146875</a><!-- m --> :(

Ostensibly the same tent £163 delivered (from my local outdoorsy outlet - whose mail order is great and I could go and kick off in person for you if it went pear-shaped)

No, that's smaller - compare the specs. The DLX is bigger all round (as is my wife - I think DLX might be her cup size.)

Having just come back from Glasto, I've looked at a million tents; like the look of a bell tent with roll up walls for just camping, but conclude that square is best for a stall. Canvas sounds more hardwearing and repairable, but so heavy. Anyone know how to get a tent made fire retardant and get a fire retardant certificate??

If it's canvas you can impregnate it, e.g with a solution of sodium silicate (water glass); nylon and polyester fabrics are usually made fire retardant by adding certain things to th bulk melt, before extruding the fibers and spinning. Don't know whether there are any aftermarket fire retardants for synthetics...

I've lived in everything from nylon tarp shelters to traditional tee pees, cowboy teepees and wall tents of canvas.
You have your tent. NOW is the time to set it up, not upon arriving at your retreat at sunset with a torch holding faulty batteries. Once you have it standing get a garden hose and give it a soak. Any leaks or stitching defects should again be addressed NOW. Learn the knot for increasing tension of guy lines. The 4 of you need to pile in with sleeping bags and kit. Sort out NOW where everything goes.Tripping over your kids at 2A.M. making a run to the lou is bad form; breaking your neck doubly so.
NEVER bring a oil powered lamp or fuel driven cooking devise into a tent. I don't care if it's a lousy ESBIT for a single cuppa. Cook outside and use an electric torch inside-again, no kerosene lanterns, candles, church frankinsence or myrrhe. People succumb every year to carbon monoxide poisoning tents. They may seem drafty affairs but are deathtraps with little oxygen reserve or venting ability.
Acquire and assemble a repair kit.
Have fun!
