best make of tent?

Hi All

I'm looking to buy a large tent for my family (2 adults, 2 kids). I like the "tunnel" design as we are all quite tall it seems like a good spacious solution.

I'm thinking of something like this:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.outdoormegastore.co.uk/acatalog/Outwell_Montana_6_Tunnel_Tent.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.outdoormegastore.co.uk/acata ... _Tent.html</a><!-- m -->

Any idea which makes / brands are best?

Thanks

Ollie

The best tents, bar none, are made by 'De Waard', of Schagen, the Netherlands. These are heavyweight Egyptian cotton pyramid tents, and are not particularly suited for 'travel camping', where you pitch your tent every night at a different spot, but for trips where you pitch your tent for more than a few days, they can't be beat. Expensive though. There's a lively second-hand market for these in the Netherlands.

A full size family tent (sleeping 4 comfortably, or 6 with no problem, or more if you can stand crowding) weighs about 40 kilos, and takes about an hour to pitch when acting alone, 30 minutes with 2 or 3 people.

Aternatively, Swedish 'tipi' style tents have much going for them.

In high-tech, synthetic fabric tents, there is a huge selection of brands and models -- if you stick to the recognized brands, you will generally not find a truly bad product...

Oh, and remember, nowhere is the old adage that you get what you pay for more true than with tents...

Of course over at <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.tentandpeg.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.tentandpeg.com</a><!-- m -->, there are a number of helpful stewards to guide you to your tent purchase.

I thought that was flysheet & peg...

Nope, the best site is groundsheetandrevolver.com bar none. There's a bit too much tent chat though. Gets in the way of the gun discussions.

These look nice

tentipi.co.uk

But £££!!!

Still, it's got a single pole and is made in Sweden - so it should be out on dvd sometime . . . .

I got a tunnel tent a few years ago from ebay. Cheapo from tentastic.com .

Rubbish it was. The rain would collect in the hollows between the ridges, then drip drip drip inside.

We sent it back. I wouldn't recommend a tunnel tent. Or at least pay a little more for better quality.

A hotel or Bed & Breakfast would be my suggestion.

You should just buy a shed...easier to put up and more useful when the Mrs says she's not going camping again.

she's the keen one, unfortunately, or I'd have a caravan / campervan :(

Fortunately, my employer provides tented accommodation. Unfortunately, they choose who you are going to share with, when you are going and most unpleasantly of all, they choose the campsite. :(

There's usually sand, but not much sea and if you see a van coming towards you with a driver wearing a 'Mr Whippy' hat and playing dodgy music, never mind a 99 - you're number's up  ;)
