16 January, 2023

Prep: Hot towel
Razor: Weber ARC
Blade: Permasharp
Brush: Brad Sears Archduke 26/50 2-Band Manchurian
Soap: Los Jabones de Joserra: Passion Incense
Post: CeraVe moisturising lotion..
Fragrance: Les Nombres d'Or : Oud by Mona di Orio

well, that was a mixed shave... the lather was exemplary, as usual... but I really didn't like the Permasharp/Weber combo, as everything was fine until I went ATG, and then it became unbearable. a shame, that.

1/16/2023 shave of the day

Soap: Derby Stick
Brush: Semouge 830
Razor: Razorock Lupo Bakelite
Blade: Astra SP
Aftershave: Skin Braccer

Haven’t used the Derby stick for about 6 month’s now as it sits in my dopp bag.

Got a solid shave this morning. But my skin was a little dryer than I like afterwards. Being winter and going outside later today. I finished this shave off with some Nivea post shave balm.

Day 2 on my under used soaps and it’s the HWF. I’ve no idea why this has dropped out of my soap circulation as it’s a delight from start to finish and provides an excellent cushioning lather. The post shave feel is amazing. It absolutely needs to be reintroduced and used more often!

16/1/21

Pre - Palmolive
Soap - Florena Cream
Brush - Yaqi Faux Horse/Rainbow Handle
Razor - FBT Tech
Blade - Astra Superior Platinum (5)
Post - Witch Hazel
AS - Denim Original

I've been wet shaving for a few years now, and in this timespan, I found myself taking paths that lead onto other ones and some others which are dead ends. One of the latter are larger brushes, in particular synthetics. I have an Omega Goodfellas Smile Wild Hog which has a 26mm knot, with a 57mm loft which is quite large for face feel, but has enough backbone to be controllable in the shave and I like using it. I have a few larger Yaqi Synthetics, and today I used my neglected Faux Horse knot in the Rainbow handle, with a 26mm knot and a 54mm loft, which is a great brush actually, produces a lot of lather with very little ease, but I find the face feel to be enormous! Like building a lather by putting a dollop of shaving cream in a mop and putting my face in it. I think I might set aside a period of time to just use my large synths and decide if they are for me, and if not I will PIF them.
Nonetheless, the large Yaqi brush produced a very nice lather from the Florena shaving cream. It has a synthetic chamomile scent which is fine enough but not my favourite, but the performance is very good. I think I should compare it to the new Nivea shaving cream which comes in the pump, which I think might produce one of the slicker lathers from a shaving cream. The blade was past it's best but I managed to get the job done.

Anyway gents, I hope you have a good start to the week.

I think I will have to get some of this shaving soap.
Is the scent a bit underwhelming? Is it weak?

Same here - the longer I do it, the smaller the knots have become. No bad thing - more precise for face lathering - I.

I, what are your smaller brushes of choice?

Recently I've been using a few 20mm Yaqi synths that have been revelation, they seem to a lot more precise and also release lather better than their larger counterparts. The smaller Omegas with 22mm knots take time to break in, but they seem to keep their shape better than their larger counterparts after they break in.

Let's start with the good points.
The Old Spice shaving soap was fantastic. I'd forgotten how slick the lather is but also how strong the scent is. Deserves its reputation.

I finished the 7 days platinum blade, this being shave no. 3 with it. Had to ditch it partway through and finished off the German Personna, which was also on shave 3 and after which I also ditched.

Face a little hot and shave quite patchy.

Was going to go for the Wars Expert aftershave but felt my face could do with a bit of cooling so went with the Lider balm.
I seem to have had a mild reaction to the balm.
The initial heat lead to a mild itching and over an hour or so my shaven parts of my face felt like sunburn.
I had tested a little of the balm on my wrist and had felt a little tingling but this died down after a while and I forgot about it!

Update: two hours later I applied more Lider balm to my wrist and it's been an hour and no irritation. So it's likely I'll be able to use this balm again, which is good news.

Had to use the magic of proraso pre/post to soothe.

Hoping for some more consistent shaves over the next few weeks as I feel there's been a wild variation lately.
At least for the moment I don't feel the need to push blades to the point they are uncomfortable to assess their lifespan.
