Russian Shaving Brushes

Just been in touch with Unuta77 and my cologne and cream was only sent on 29th, so could be a few days yet. He also confirmed that the Rapira Classic Steel is only a concept at present and not a production model. I got the impression it wasn't the first time he'd been asked that question!

I saw that yesterday too. Nice piece, but I do have an Russian Ideal Adjustable - hopefully the rest of my gear will arrive this week. I've sorted out some Rimsky-Korsikov which shall play in the background. I drew the line at buying a USSR hammer and sickle vest though.

I trust it's not 'Flight of the Bumblebee'? You'll have major blood-letting if you try to finish within the time constraints of that piece :icon_lol:. You'd be much better with 'Capriccio Espagnol' and the 'Russian Easter Festival Overture' combined or go for 'Scheherazade' which is one of my absolute favourite pieces of music.

I'm a huge lover of Russian composers and whilst not all that well versed or especially learnéd, I do have a number of CDs of my favourite works.

Finally, beware of some of the huge dynamic swings and changes of such music whilst shaving: there are a number of 'big hits' that may cause your razor hand to suddenly jolt. :icon_eek:

Thanks for reminding those!

'Tis Scheherazade. Beautiful piece. I may segue that into "Pictures at an Exhibition" by Mussorgsky.

BTW - I lied about the CCCP vest....

Well, if you're going to be playing 'Pictures....' then please be very careful around the beginning of the strangely named 'A Hut on Fowl's Legs' or you may add a new smile to your visage! Now that's a sonic wallop if ever there was one. :D

Perhaps a more genteel shaving piece would be Borodin's 'In the Steppes of Central Asia'?

H, you are most welcome but the thanks really goes to JDS for reminding me of my love for such wondrous music. America has some glorious orchestras but Russia, the composers. ;)

Noted and downloaded... will give Borodin a listen in the car on the way home...

The set of Polovtsian Dances is Borodin's other 'usual suspect' but there are a few more beautiful works of his out there.

Here's another Russian favourite by Kabalevsky and a heck of performance from the NBC and Toscanini:

An absolute starlet from Tchaikovsky, throwing off conventional composing restraints. Valery Gergiev with the verviev!

The legendary Minnesota recording of Tchiakovsky's 1812 with canon fire and carillion. Critics of the day labelled Mr T's 1812 as a 'noise'. If so, then what a glorious noise!

From the man who inspired so many of his countrymen in later years, Glinka. The London SO with Sir Georg Solti:

Apologies if this overload but the surface has merely been scratched. ;)

P.S. despite my notes above, don't worry about all this 'which orchestra/conductor' and 'best performance' carry on - just play it and enjoy 'cos its ruddy magic!

Haven't really dipped into Shostakovich much beyond his Assault on Beautiful Gorky so thanks for this. Not properly grappled with Stravinsky, Balakirev or Glazunov either but for Modest Mussorgsky, I have special affection.

Shostakovich's Assault on Beautiful Gorky from The Unforgettable Year 1919 (allegedly a rather poor Russian film but I've never had the dubious pleasure):

Now this isn't Russian rather Ukranian but is another product of the Soviet years. This was part of my introduction into classical music as my Mother signed up for one of those magazine and CD things years ago hoping to discover what the theme tune to 'The Onedin Line' was. Too young for the programme but the music made a lasting impression when the poor old dear finally tracked it down (it wasn't on any of her 50 or 60 odd CDs :icon_lol:).

If I'm getting carried away, please say so.

'Tis certainly not easy listening, H. Perhaps an acquired taste as its very dark and, can't quite find the word I'm looking for. I can see why you wouldn't want anything sharp in your hand whilst listening to that!
