Hello all,

Anyone know of any Russian Shaving brushes? I have an irrational desire to do some all Russian shaving. I've got a razor, some cream and blades, just need a brush to complete the set.

I'd be surprised if there was nothing out there. Anyway, I'm sure the combined knowledge of TSR will the point me in the right direction.

Many thanks, in advance,

Jon

That's about it. Costs 90p, bristles looks like crap, and I doubt you'll manage to arrange a delivery, unless you know someone in Russia and have them do it.
Rest of the stuff is imported, as you'd expect.

Russian made ones will be hard to come by.. Will look it up for you when I'm back from work. What's your current set up, by the way?

That's very generous, thank you.

Current set up..

I have several razors, several brushes, multiple creams and soaps. I picked up an Ideal adjustable from another TSR member and I am in love the Voskhod blades. Russian creams seem to have to a good reputation, so managed to find a supplier of Tet-a-Tet, which is on its way to me as we speak.

I did see this, but not really sure of its Russian authenticity... http://www.sovietstores.com/soviet-personal-effects/army-ww2-type-shaving-brush

I have emailed them but no response thus far.

Interested in any information you may have.

All the best,

Jon

Looks like a Belarussian one I'd found, but might as well be a Chinese import. The one I showed has a nicer handle IMO, and is genuinely Russian.
As for the blades - try to get hold of some Sputniks, they are excellent. Cost about 20p per pack.

Rapira Swedish Super steel are excellent (available on fleabay) and Platinum Lux probably are (have a pack I've never tried). Ladas are good too but possibly not as sharp (fleabay again).
Hope you are getting on nicely with that Ideal. It was a good little razor and I like mild-medium aggressive but this was still too mild for me even at top setting. Have you tried the Wizamet yet? (I should have asked this in PM but never mind!)

I haven't tried either of them yet, tbh, but will be over the course of the next week... I love the look & feel of them, so looking forward to my Eastern Bloc experience very soon... watch this space.

Well the guy at Soviet Stores assures me that he purchased a job lot whilst in Russia. For £5 with free P&P I thought why not. I doubt I will be able to vouch for its Russian heritage, but I will be able to report on the brushes qualities, or lack of. We'll see....

By the by just found out that today is the anniversary of Rasputin's birth.

And what about cologne? If you're really brave then Unuta77 on eBay has a fine selection including this green stuff which appeared to be popular with Alan Hansen, judging by the pic.

I wasn't brave enough, the postage put me off!

I've stuck to blades and razors so far, you are brave man comrade and will recieve mother country's highest honour.

I needed cheering up and that was just the tonic, thank you. :icon_lol:

Well I've done the deed and purely by coincidence ordered that very same cologne from Balalaika stores along with the 40 pack blade selection & Svoboda after shave cream. All set for a Russian shave when it lands.
Will report when it happens.

I know that After Shave is used partially for its antispetic purposes, but does it have to be as dual purpose as this

I'm so interested to hear about the all-Russian shave, it's something I wanted to do for a long time but I couldn't get all the kit together, I think it's a fantastic quest. Keep us updated!

(Although I rather suspect the blades are the very best bit!)
