My first DE shave....

After weeks of watching YouTube videos and reading this forum I had my first DE shave this morning.

Had a shower and used a Nivea face scrub for my prep. Applied some King of Shaves pre shave oil before I started making my lather. I had a number of samples to chose from but I decided to use the TOBS sandalwood I bought before I went a bit mad buying loads of samples.

I put some cream into the Razorock Pilssoft brush (the brush had been left in the sink with warm water for a few minutes) and started lathering in the bowl. It lathered up pretty quickly but I wasn't sure if I need more soap or water. I put a little more soap in the brush and started to lather up on my face. The lather was OK but I wasn't 100% happy with the consistency. I guess this is one of the many things that will come with practice.

Now onto the big moment of truth, actually shaving.
I used the Merkur 34c with an Astra blade. I'd put the blade in before I had a shower and checked the alignment of the blade (Thank you 'Nick shaves').
I took a deep breath and went for it. My first reaction was, "Is that it?".
I did a three pass shave (swilling my face off between each pass) and took my time. I only caught myself once on my bottom lip, right in the centre. It was very small and stopped after apply some cold water and pressure.
I finished with Nivea aftershave balm and some Fine Platinum aftershave.
The shave took 20 minutes and another 5 minutes to clean everything up.

So what I my first impressions I hear you ask.
Although it was time consuming and you have to be more careful than a cartridge razor the end results were stunning. I've never had a better shave. My face is super smooth and I've been cool all day. I'm not great in the heat and this shave has really cooled me down.
Seen as this was my first time I'll really excited to see the improvements in the future.
Apologies for the poor quality photo. Having seen the staggering photography on show here I really need to step me game up.
Excellent set up, this isn't Flickr mate...the photo's fine..oh and enjoy your next shave.

Got any razor bumps yet? I gave up DE shaving about 2 years ago...

Greetings

Well done and especially so for obviously doing your homework thoroughly right from the off. The tools you have chosen (all of them) in my opinion could not be bettered to start out with, and if you chose to (which you probably will not) for any amount of time into the future. Your start is a model example of how to start, totally unlike mine where I took no advice and did no research and made all of the wrong choices and stuck with them for years as I knew no better!

Regards
Dick.

Hello @Blackmass I also did some research too before I started wet shaving. I watched a lot of YouTube video's and browsing web shops to see what was available. My first razor set was the a Muhle (S31H870SR). It was the Muhle R89 head. From there I started to buy more and more shaving related stuff. The one thing that change my shaving a lot was beard mapping. So try that and your shaves will improve. And no pressure as @riverrun would say.

Have you moved onto straights then?
No, after a bad experience with 2 shaving subscription clubs recently, in a nutshell just awful blades. I have started using Gillette Proglide, yes I know expensive but the blades are sharp, and much less chance of razor burn, bumps, or whatever else blunt blades can do to you. I joined the Gillette club for the time being. I have previously tried Clean Shaven and then King of Shaves subscription clubs, I can't recommend them to anyone with fair sensitive skin, or anyone who likes a sharp blade.

Razor burn and bumps is why I stopped using Gillette cartridges. The multi blade pulling and cutting cheese grater systems were a disaster for my skin.
Angle and pressure, once you master that razor burn and pumps aren't a problem with a DE razor.

Hello Andy, I hope you find joy with you Mercury 23C , just find a blade that suits your skin and watch a few of those videos on YouTube and then you can throw out that pro glide and enjoy a propper razor!
They say it will save you money in the long run!!!! I don't know who they are but it probably won't if you get the bug.
Save money.....ha ha ha ha fat chance but I love it!

Give a man a Cartridge razor and he'll have a shave. Give a man a DE razor and he'll be skint for life.
