I watched that video with interest. This morning I used the same procedure, with painting the lather, longer strokes and paying particular attention to my top lip ensuring that I was using as few passes as needed.
On the whole I don’t get a lot of irritation; I believe I have refined my shaving to the point where it is minimal and most days I do not have a shaving rash, when I do have a little it does not last long. Also I do not normally go against the grain, especially during the week. However using all the items highlighted earlier in this thread the one spot where I sometimes get a little irritated (on my neck) was absolutely free from any irritation today. This was confirmed by a little less sting on blocking my face afterwards.
At the time I felt the shave quality, in terms of closeness, was just the same. Sitting here in the evening I can see that I do have a bit more of a shadow than normal but most days that is not a problem, if I was going out tonight I would have to shave again which I would not normally have to do.
I have to admit I was sceptical about only using painting strokes to build the lather, I do use a painting motion but most days I swirl the brush first as it builds lather quicker, I then paint with the brush to even the lather out before taking the razor to my face.
As mentioned I am not one for having an aggressive shave and prefer a comfortable shave with no red blotches. Because of this I do not know if the combination of the elements resulted in no irritation or it was just a gentle shave which I get most days, but it felt better. Painting the lather on did take a little more time so perhaps this extra time lathering helped as well. Either way it was a good shave and repeating this will tell me if I want to shave this way every day, I will continue doing this to the end of the week at least to see how it goes.
Today I did not bowl lather, I just face lathered with an Irisch Moos stick and that stick lathers easily, I only built a thin lather, although I do admit I am quite fond of the “Rabid dog†look myself. I will see how well I can build lather in a bowl using only a painting motion tomorrow morning.
So my summary of what I have learned from this is that using your video as a guide I get a less irritated shave but overall it was not as close. I would take less irritation over a slightly closer shave every day. I have been DE shaving for quite a few years now so it just shows you that returning to the basics is good to do from time to time.
Thanks for taking the time to do that Robert, it provoked a lot of thought as to how I was shaving and perhaps how I had got a little sloppy. Even if I don’t stick to it as strictly as yourself I know how to minimise the irritation even further which is useful if I am visiting a customer or shaving before going out for the evening.
