Seriously, whisky is well worth a shot. It's not known as the water of life for nothing.

Going to second this:

Man cough mixture - to be taken just before going to bed.

1 ( V. V. large) measure of Irish whiskey
2 teaspoons of white or brown sugar
2 slices of freshly cut lemon, studded with 4 or 6 cloves per slice
half a mug of boiling water

(if you feel really crap you can juice half a lemon, and add it to the mix using a strainer or even better a muslin bag / clean tea towel,)

Take care if making in a tumbler, cheap ones may crack, use a mug if unsure.

I've tried a very similart setup at least 3 times a day it seems to be getting worse :(

Try this then....

Struggle to the corner shop and buy a half bottle of the cheapest shittiest grain whisky they have.

Go home, climb into bed and neck as much as you can before you're incapable of remembering who you are or what you're drinking.

Sleep.

Wake up.

Either you'll have a hangover from Hell or will be right as rain.

All this pish with hot water, sugar and lemon is exactly that... pish.

Cheers for the advise, since I don't seem to have much to lose at this stage,I might give it a shot

The GP may be thinking pneumonia. James' symptoms don't sound severe enough for that to be very likely (it would be a case of dragging the doctor to you rather than the other way around), but if that was the diagnosis, a course of amoxycillin or some antibiotic of that sort would be the standard prescription.
