A motor cycle for a mature gentleman - don't laugh!

How big are you prepared to go Peter. Mate of mine had a Triumph thruxton. It's a very very docile 900cc in-line twin. It is a remade version of the original. Low revving, wonderful old British bike sound and looks, but with modern mechanics and electrics.
We swapped bikes one afternoon a couple of years back on a ride out, at the time i had a ZX9R (900cc missile). anyhow i wouldn't let him have it back. It was a joy to plod around on. ideally suited to your neck of the woods. very well mannered machine.
Take a look on the internet. might be right up your street and be a little bit of nostalgia.

Major prob with the Triumph I heard of was that they weren't coming with the bright bits laquered, so the advice in the instruction manual was to thoroughly wash the wheels & metalwork after every run where they may have encountered road conditions which could lead to corrosion. Don't know if that has been rectified.

No idea about that, Mates one was bought new and stayed mint. Sold it coz he needed the room for his other 3 bikes in the garage. looked like new when he sold it. Very comfortable ride as well.

So Triumph make scooters now?

I've heard of the Triumph Playtex twin stroke,

...rarely allowed to handle them nowadays.

Had a chat with Jimmy, the current owner of A J Bartlett in Lymington who has been there since 1958. Even older than me.

Spent the morning pottering around on a Kymco 50 cc scooter/moped automatic. Very nippy. First time on this sort of thing in nearly 50 years. Then decided on a Lifan Mirage 125 cc. At around £1250 new on the road, it will do for me this summer to get used to two wheels again. Jimmy has been selling and maintaining these Chinese made bikes for five years now. There have been very few problems with them. I sat on a Honda Hornet 600 cc which can get up to a ton in a few seconds. For someone with my record for speeding it wasn't difficult to resist.

So in a couple of days, Fido will be setting off on his travels. After a few weeks I'll know if it's going to be a novelty or something that will endure. In which case I've no doubt more temptations will lie ahead. One things for sure. I'm not joining another forum!

I can see pattern developing Peter, after a short run with the Chinese bike you'll end up buying something British...

a couple of dozen Lucus headlamps + wing mirrors.

Maybe Fido's Bike Blog is in gestation.

I must get used to this lark again though. When I looked out on my driveway this morning I saw I'd left my new crash helmet on the ground outside the garage. They are mostly honest round here so I was lucky. And yes Tony, I suspect I'll soon move on once I've been in action for a few months. There's a Harley Davidson store in Southampton and Sammy Miller's Museum to inspect just two miles away. Even a top Plisson is starting to look cheap.

When I saw the title of the thread, I was expecting a picture of a bike with a modified saddle. Why? I remember hearing about an old guy who had a modern toilet fitted but asked the plumber back to try and alter the water level - turns out when he sat down his balls dipped into the water. Getting old ... oh joy!

Could have been worse ................... if he'd been an old motorcyclist it may have been his piles !

Now I know I said I wouldn't be joining another forum. But I just registered with a forum for Chinese motorcycle owners. The first thread I read included a guy who said this: "I'm 48 and have owned over 400 motorcycles. My collection is 60 at present .........."

Some people, somewhere, are dafter than us! I must ask him how many shaving brushes he's got.

Makes sense to join a specialised forum but at least most of your brush collection can be contained in a cupboard or so, see you later Fido.

Not yet. Disturbed the peace of my sleepy village yesterday evening. Old rocker seen lurching around village playing field. Off for some refresher training on Sunday. Ponies as yet unaware of what's to come.
