New Maseto brush

I too have fallen foul of the Maseto spell recently. Started with the 30mm silvertip - bought from a member here that had de-funked it but not used it in anger before sending it on to me. Superb - a wall of badger but not floppy, a joy to use. A very dense knot. I exclusively face lather. It doesn't hog the soap despite the size of the knot. The only other brush I own to compare it to is my Chubby 2 Best - the Maseto is better - time will tell but that was my initial reaction. In fairness, I don't have the Chubby Super at the same size. I have in front of me as I type my new Finest Maseto - with a very beautiful variegated brown handle. Again courtesy of a fellow member. It's never seen water and I will need to break it in. On the face of it - pun intended - they are astonishingly good value for money. The new one has incredibly soft tips but with the resilience of the best two-band. I own an Anniversary Vie Long and this is my reference brush of this type. Simpson's must be taking a hit? - cheers - I.
 
I have a lot of respect for Simpson. Their history is rich, the handles are beautifully turned and knots well judged... I suspect they won't be too badly affected, or if they are it would be a case of streamlining the range to become more exclusive (kill the budget line) from what I've seen online they enjoy a certain cachet in the US at least that will take more than a $50 Chinese brush to topple. The gaudy coloured hilariously named "Limited Edition" models that never seem to run out priced at an average of £275 per brush is where they make the money, Maseto has demonstrated production costs can't be that different between a £50 brush and a £275 one but the profit margin is much larger.

I own 5 Maseto brushes and no Simpsons. I really like the look of the limited edition brushes but c'mon let's be honest here, the resins are no more than say $10 for enough for two brushes and the elusive Manchurian hair that no one seems to be able to describe where it comes from on the animal as opposed to High Mountain White or Silvertip cant be much more than $10 a knot more than Silvertip wholesale on the hair price. That to me doesn't make for just under £300 for the finished product as nice as they are. I'll stick to my Maseto.

My two 30mm brushes have found a new home, hair is fantastic but as expected too big and the way they eat soap .... great brushes if you want to finish a bunch of soaps that have been standing around for far too long ;-) I'll keep my 24mm brushes, love them.
 
Mine seems to be still stuck in China, as the tracking info hasn't changed since July 6th ("TIANJIN Arrival at inward office of exchange"; no idea why it would be at a Chinese inward office in the first place). I ordered on June 25th. :confused:
