Thinking about a shavette

I've also thought about a shavette, and I've decided if I was to get one I'd just get the cheap one from barber blades. I love my DE, and would likely be very dangerous with a shavette, I know what I'm like, but maybe it's the danger that attracts me? Who knows.

On Shavettes and Shark blades. At the same time that I purchased my Derby 1/2 blades; Shark 1/2 blades were also on 'sale' . Not sure why, but the Sharks did not work well.

Even as I write this I know it's going to sound stupid because I've never tried a shavette - but the thought of an exposed DE blade fills me with horror - even though I use straights and the Feather SE blade.

I can't put it into words, but there seems to be a big difference between a Feather, Kai or other SE blade as opposed to a cut down or whole DE. Now don't get me wrong, the Feather will cut you if you're not careful (and sometimes even when you're careful), so why would I be wary of using a shavette? I think it's a combination of things including:

- Stories of people experiencing multiple cuts on first use.
- The fact that, unlike the Feather ProGuard, there is absolutely no defence against the edge.
- Weight, balance and other intangibles that together amount to an instrument that is not designed for people to shave their own face with. Bear in mind that the majority are aimed at hairdressers and as for the ones used by Italian barbers for shaving - well it's a completely different thing when you're shaving someone else.

Overall I'd recommend going down the specialist route of Feather, Kai or the other cheaper brands - in fact anything that will take a proper SE blade.

You're a self-harmer then?

You'd think so, wanting to try a shavette, but alas no, not me. Too cheerful :icon_razz:. And a low pain threshold!

But I mean I now have a fixation with knives, not in a 'stabby' way, I just like owning them and sharpening them, which has resulted in a few cuts, and from a young age I've always liked fire too. I remember lighting newspaper in the back garden using a magnifying glass. I guess I'm just weird:s

I think it's knowing that if I made a mistake with a shavette I'd certainly be punished, meaning I'd have to treat it with respect and be very careful in order to master it, that attracts me.

A shavette can give a great shave, the main problem I have found is as Rob points out. It is very light and to me just doesn't give any feedback. The other big problem is the fear factor, people are too scared of it so when they try it they use too light touch. Yes I know you are all screaming at me, but too light a touch IMO leads the blade to skip and jump on the skin. You need a firm touch, neither too light nor too heavy. I know that doesnt describe things very well but it's what I feel, too light and you pull the blade away causing it to hop skip and jump all over your face. Then it digs in on the next jump and bites you! To heavy a touch and, well we all know what the result is. Give it a try, it's cheap and the good thing is the blade is short. It allows you to get into trickier wee spots than a full length straight. If you do get one take your time, get your prep spot on and most of all relax. Set aside a good half hour for the shave itself and pay very close attention to angles.
If you have the pennies then the Feather is the way to go if you dont want to learn stropping, it is a fantastic razor although a bit overpriced. I have now owned 4 straights, a shavette and a Feather. The best on overall ease of use and close comfortable shave is the Feather!

OK, so I have watched all the videos and I have thought long and hard about this and I I've gone and done it!

Just put in an order for a Feather, Artist Club SS, that comes with 15 Pro Guard blades.

I'm very excited about it but will hang on for a day off before I try it out (once it arrives). It seems that the advice is to not rush things. I might even play-shave without a blade just to get the coordination right.

A question for all you Artist Club owners...with the exception of the Pro Guards which I know about, what are the differences between the other blades? I know I wont need them for a while and may stick for ever with the Pro Guards, but was curious.

Cheers,
BR

The basic difference is in terms of blade exposure so starting with the Light which has the least exposure you then move on to Pro Guard which obviously has the guard but a bit more exposure. The Pro is the same size without the guard and finally there's the Pro Super which is the biggest and most aggressive.

I did a review of the Cobra razor and all 4 Feather SE blades but I don't know how to link. If your'e interested just take a look in the review section.

I'd be interested to learn how much you have paid for the Artist Club and blades!

I've just ordered the same from West Coast Shaving.

David

Hi David,
No secret, I paid £129.90 all in. I know it can be cheaper with West Coast but I guess it depends on shipping and whether you get clobbered for tax

Cheers,
BR

UK Rob,

That's great thanks for the explanation, I will have a look at the reviews.

Thanks!

I shall be in the US next week so WCS are sending it to my hotel. I will use it (or try!) at least once and then bring it home with my other shaving kit!

I will still be way under the duty-free allowance!!

I really wanted to also bring back some Krampert's Bay Rum but they can only send it by surface which will take too long when I am only there for a week! Ho hum!!

David,

I was in New York a couple of months ago and saw some Feather Artists in a shop. I wasn't thinking about it at that stage. They even had the wood handled one which I would have bought like a shot using 20:20 hindsight.

You reminded me that I'm going to make a set of wooden scales for my Feather - probably in dark ebony with white acrylic liners just to keep everything clean - I'll post some pictures of how it turns out.

Sounds really nice. I wish Feather would give us more choice with the handles, on second thoughts no I can feel a collection starting and I haven't even got one yet.

I had said I would have a non bladed play first, having never handled a straight before. Excitement got the better of me and I didn't bother. I just took my time and took it easy. Started with my cheeks and found that so comfortable I progressed down my neck. Before I new it I had down the whole lot WTG. Did another WTG pass so that I could repeat the movements. This left me with an incredible result and no cuts or nicks. I was very impressed.
I have carried on with the feather, and will use it exclusively until I gain my confidence and so speed.

Nice one, I hope I have your skills. Very excited, they've dispatched it so maybe it will turn up at the weekend.
