And to resolve my curious nature this evening's theme was 'Brides(razor)head revisited'
Mr Ryder - Ikon B1 Closed comb (to be politically correct with its name)
Celia Ryder - ATT Collossus
Charles Ryder - Polsilver (The Polish version)
Julia Flyte - Muhle butterscotch synthetic
Anthony Blanche - OSP Shogun
Bridey Flyte - ADP Colonia Club
Ship's Barber - Me
Being as I am still away from home at work and remain having very little choice over shaving equipment I decided to revisit my previous reported SOTD to check out 'was it really that good?'
Work has been somewhat busy over the past two weeks and together with the recent run of hot weather the tug I work on was starting to look like a morgue for dead flies. So the past few days has given us a break to give it new legs and remove its tired appearance. Arduous and physical. So this evening saw me back at my father's and after a day of graft time to clean up and relax,
One refreshing shower later as part of a muck removing exercise and a final clean with Ted Baker 'refreshing and revigorating gel' was a good start to this evenings clean up operations. A tick in the box as indeed the 'refreshing and revigorating gel' is refreshing and revigorating. And it is a gel. I have always liked decent shower gels and Ted Baker (3 for 2 at Boots) is a fine example. Another favourite of mine is David Beckham. And I thought he was just a pretty footballer. I never once imagined he created such a great line in men's grooming products. What a man.
So prattle and tittle tattle aside 'what about the bloody shave?'
I guess this could read very much like my previous effort but on this occasion I have tried to critique it all and add a few further observations.
So I will start at the pointed working end and the Ikon. For a razor which started life nearly removing my own I have really grown to love and appreciate its fine shaving qualities and abilities. As much as it is a well known fact I rather like another American made razor, what I would score as a negative is its rather large and bulky head (not anywhere as bad as a Futur though) which to me doesn't give the same sense of ultimate control.
The Ikon in comparison is incredibly slim in profile which allows a far better idea as to where the blade is actually being positioned. Certainly a big plus, Add to this the fact it is a genuine full width blade razor and I am somewhere towards shaving heaven. ATT it is said are full width heads, but I would quite happily argue this is not completely true as the blade still overhangs the sides. Why would I fuss about this? I have on occasions been known to clip my ears with the protruding tabs and believe me ears are a bugger to stop bleeding. I put this down to the fact that I am at times fucking clown shoes.
I also find it has a shallower shaving angle and it takes a bit of time (carefully) experimenting as to where the feedback and music begins and the angle where a quick reach for the styptic pencil becomes a necessity. Too steep and it will happily dig in causing bloody chaos. Too shallow and naff all happens.
It is not the best of razors to throw around the regions of the chin and I do find others do a better job in this area. Strangely I find a larger head (R89 and Timless for example) to have more control here. But you can't have everything in life.......unless you steal things.
Overall the Ikon is all about control as long as one exercises ones own. But what a babe and at the moment it is nudging away and demanding more respect in the form of 'the dogs danglies'. Get down you iconic Rover, your time will come, your time will come. What I am learning is that as I have moved towards a more aggressive razor my shaves are more efficient, less irritating and smooth to a whole new level. I am also finding that as an 'in between those serious shaves' razor; I can have it all done and dusted so quickly and yet still leave the shower room feeling 'this is fucking awesome'
For me the iconic Ikon
Muhle butterscotch synthetic brush, Blah de blah de blah de blah de blah as a quick summary. Did I mentioned it is butterscotch in colour? Ah well, it is. After the disappointment with my lather creating skills using my last brush of choice in The Traditional Shaving Co best badger (is more than one brush known as a cete of badger brushes?) I decided to return to well trodden grounds. No problems this time around and a big lathery lather with a big whipped head of wonderful OSP Shogun in a matter of less than one minute. What a God of brushes the Muhle is to me. Thank you Mr Bowles for the opportunity. You have saved so many unfortunate badgers.
OSP - It is exactly what I have said before. I just need to get home so that I can have choice of another of their bizarre and wonderful creams. Smelling like a Thai take away is getting a little monotonous in much the same way as I am.
At least this time with me not working onboard overnight I had the opportunity to use an after shave (and not the usual dab of diesel behind the ears) and for this evening it just had to be the all great ADP Colonia Club. I did have another choice but Chanel Bleu doesn't really do it for me. I look upon it has being yet another generic perfume. The ADP sings class the Bleu sings like a frog.
Yes indeed, a wonderful shave once again using the Ikon and this evening was a real uber shave. A revisit to my shave of a few days back has once again thrown up great results and solidly confirmed it really was 'that good'. In fact I am going to declare this time was an even further improvement and I cannot think how life over a shower sink with a lump of machined stainless steel can get any better. Good God this shaving malarkey can be rewarding.
Enjoy your washroom time chaps and may your shaves be as good as the sex life of Lego people
So back home tomorrow with two new toys waiting in the form of a Razorock Hawk V2 and a Timeles 0,95. Hopefully I will report back in due course and all in the name name of literal torture.
