Decisions, decisions.......

After much reading I've chosen my starter kit:-

Vulfix 404 Brush
Feather Popular Razor
Tub of Taylor Shaving Cream (Sandalwood)
10 Derby Extra Blades.

I thought I'd try to get the hang of things using the same blade so that its only the technique that changes as I learn while everything else remains consistent. The Derby blades seem to be "ordinary" I'll try a sample pack once I'm happy that I'm doing it right then I'll be able to make a considered decision which blade I like.

I'll place the order tomorrow so if there are any glaring errors or suggestions please let me know.

looks like a good starting point and sensible thinking regarding keeping everything the same to begin with.Welcome aboard.

No error's just preference.

I'll send you a pack of Derby's and a few Feather's/Super Iridiums, get a sample pack from Connaught shaving.
Budget permitting, I'd just go for a razor with a bit more quality like a Jagger, Muhle, Merkur or even the vintage. (If they are still available)

I suspect that you are right that I'll want a better quality razor, but my thoughts are to try the Feather then I'll have an idea whether I want a longer/shorter handle, more/less aggressive, lighter/heavier etc.

At present I have very little idea.

The thing about the feather is it's only £8 cheaper than an EJ DE87 which is a great starting point. It receives glowing reviews from the guys here viewtopic.php?f=31&t=1167

Unfortunately preferences in razors don't really progress in that way there are just too many variables and that's not including your own improving abilities.

You can counter aggression to some extent with blade choice.
Weight and handle size can easily be accommodated but you don't want too light a razor that may encourage using more pressure.
Balance and "feel" are much more important and you will get that with dare I say a better quality razor.

Go for the quality you know it makes cents, lose the cream if you have to.

you're going to confuse the poor chap lads

Jeltz, to sum things up you've made a very fine choice to start with.

if you like this way of shaving, will you get another razor - yes
will you get a different brush - yes, probably more than one
will you get some soaps and more creams - definately
blades - a sampler pack and recommendations will lead you to try more
it's never ending

personally i'm finding that my Feather is my day to day shaver for now and the one i use when trying a different brand of blade, as is the 404 mix when using a new soap\cream.
i'm that comfortable with the way they handle

Hello Jeltz, and welcome!

I really like the look of that Feather razor. It's got a sort of retro feel to it. My RAD is gradually starting to kick in!

The Feather Popular is a decent razor. I was surprised at how smoothly it zipped across my face the first time I used it. Shame it didn't cut as well going up my neck. Yeah, I'd say it's a good entry razor (oo-er): quite mild, nicely balanced and the blades line up well (at least on mine). But...I'd still spend the extra £8 or £9 on an Edwin Jagger DE87 or the chromed DE89L (lined).

OK right decided I'm going to stick to the original plan!!!!!

I have a travel toiletry kit, (ohh that sounds camp!) so if I like DE shaving the feather will go into that but if I don't its not a lot lost. I can upgrade to the Edwin Jagger or another later.
