I switched to wet shaving from a Philips electric some years ago, but have only ever used multiblade/ disposable razors. Recently I tried a couple of different ones before returning again reluctantly to my Wilkinson Sword Quatro Titanium. I must say that the Gillette Fusion, which I bought on special offer at £2 was nice to begin with but became blunt so quickly that I couldn't even consider spending so much on replacement blades!

So I started surfing the web to see if there were other products and I found quite a movement towards straight and safety razors, which in a round about way brought me here!

We have quite a good independent chemist locally which sells quite a lot of things the likes of Boots don't so I'll be heading there to see if they stock badger brushes and shaving cream, for a start and then make the decision whether to go safety or maybe even straight

Welcome Jeltz.

You'll find plenty of good local product advice here, your mainstream chemist will usually have a cheap supply of Palmolive products (which are excellent) but your local chemist can often be the source of some hidden gems.

From cartridge to straight? I'm not so sure...learning to use a D.E razor effectively will probably get you to using a straight more
quickly than making a straight jump. I'll leave that to the dedicated straight users...

first thing is to get a decent brush and learn the process of making proper lather

i know it's tempting to get going but i'd get something else for your first DE, if you like DE shaving you'll end up getting another, better, more robust razor anyway, probably a Merkur HD.
i'd suggest the best bet for a starter would be the Feather Popular.
lots of things will come into play eventually like long\short handle, aggressiveness etc but this is a good place to start

The wilkinsons sword classic is ok,I found it better than a cartridge. I had one as my first razor from boots.
A proper razor is much ,much better though. I recently acquired an Edwin Jagger DE87 based
on the glowing reviews here from Fido and Its brilliant it only cost £20.

Get a good brush or two , again the guys here have good recommendations , I just ordered a vulfix 404 based on the recommendations here.

OK well the chemist was a bit of a waste of time, no decent brushes (3 types all under £5) but worth knowing that they have some decent soaps and aftershave balms. The only DE razor was the Wilkinson Sword Classic but no point spending £4 to just end up replacing it.

OK so is looks like I'm going to be sifting through the net to find a good starter set up.

take a look at these

or it's just as easy to mix 'n match to suit.

this is the Feather Popular i mentioned, plus Paul sells blade samplers and is one of the best respected vendors around, he's also got loads of other stuff
