New (old) brush

Here are a few pics of my newest brush - The handle originally had a rotton boar knot in but after much work with a knife and drill it now houses a 22mm pure badger TGN knot.

And a picture of the base - any ideas what it might be made of?

I am finding myself reaching for this more often as it has a firm backbone and is pleasantly "scratchy".

Presumbly Narwhal is illegal to use nowadays - I would guess it is a protected species.

It came in an old groming kit with a knackered single ring old type so it may be around he same age - I would guess Edwardian.

Maybe I should have put a more upmarket knot it !

Hi there,

Always glad to help edjumicate a few members here at TSR. I happen to know what the handle composition is, and I think the owner will be quite pleased with what he holds in his hand during the morning shave.

Having lived among the Alaskan Eskimos for many years, I can tell you this brush handle is made out of petrified oosik, which makes the OP the second owner. Nice find, but be careful where you put that thing.............never know where it's been.

My pleasure to help with the confusion,

Martin

Celluloid or oosic? Sounds like a round in Call my Bluff!

If it is the latter then I think it appeals to my sense of the ridiculous more but alas, I am inclined more towards celluloid.

My only query about it being celluloid is the inset piece in the base - I would expect celluloid to be made for a single piece. It is also slightly warm to the touch so it may be walrus dong afterall!

I am so confused!

Hi there,

Sheesh, I spelled oosik wrong in that first post (changed it). The 'oosic' version I first used is the true Eskimo spelling, which changes the pronunciation quite a bit. Normally you'll see 'oosik' almost all the time when it's mentioned. How silly of me.

Sorry for the extra confusion,

Martin

Oh......this next part is true (a refreshing change of pace): Years ago when I was interested in knives, I'd sometimes see custom pieces with oosik scales. Nice looking stuff, but a little creepy if you ask me. Plus, what exactly would you say if a woman asked you what that purty material on the knife is made of. Heh, heck of a way to start a conversation I guess.

Nicely done with the restore! Mine performs as you describe but it's 20 mm knot. Did you bore it deeper to set the loft lower or you just set the knot in place?

When I took the old knot out it was actually too deep to set the new one so I used some epoxy to make a shelf to make it a suitable loft.
