Merkur brushes?

Has anyone any experience of Merk brushes? I have just aquired a Merk futur and all is well, so far, I am getting just as good if not better shave with Merk blades and dare I say it... gillette gel. Very few nicks too for a newbie!

I am not about to splash out on the matching stand, bowl and brush just yet as I think to do so after only a dozen shaves would be a little bit ostentatious! However, I think it would look very nice in the bathroom but if it does not perform then it will become nothing more than an expensive ornament!
Please note I have not used a brush yet due to a failed order of a TOB brush and soap set. I am looking at a realistic buget of upto £25-30 and I will not, at this stage throw over £100+ at a stand and brush set, but I would be interested to hear your opinions about the brush.

I realise that all things shaving is very much down to personal experience, for example, I am happy with the performance of the Merk blades but then I have yet to try anything else.

Thanks in advance

Stand, nah, leave standing and get some soaps n creams. :)

Good luck and best wishes with regards to restraint. ;)

Stands are pretty but not required for a brush, there are a few here that will get you started.

The Duke 3 is a bit more than I want to pay for my first brush if I am honest, but thanks for the link RB73. Theres more to this shaving lark than I aver thought possible!

My old man told me that his experience of shaving brushes was that they never lasted very long.... back in the day when he used to use TOB brushes and soaps. I had come to the (possibly wrong) assumption that this must be due to him not having a stand and it therefore suffering from mildew??? I will ask him in more detail when I see him.

Thanks for that link, I understand the 404 comes highly recommended. Whilst lurking and reseaching (I am not normally one to make snap decisions :D ) on the manufacturers site the price is £40+vat where as on the above link, the price is £10??? Are these the same brushes or have I missed something?

Can honestly say that i smash the granny out of my Duke 3 and the EJ Medium and they are still going strong with no problems. Shake them dry vigorously followed by rubbing on a dry towel and then leave them standing, I've used the Duke nigh on constantly without any rotation for months. Its proving hard to kill

antdads link will see you ok.

No - the £10 one is badger/boar mix.... the one you linked to is badger only (but being Vulfix, quite floppy badger).

You could hang on to your pennies for 2-3 weeks and Fido should be making his 2221 brush available - a High Mountain White badger. If it's half as good as his previous 2201 (2 band) and 2211 (Silvertip) it'll be worth the twice the cash....

Have you checked out this thread Jonboy?

My suggestion would be to buy a Vulfix 404 for about a tenner. That would get you off to a great start. I would also PM Fido and ask him to reserve you one of his next brushes. From what I can tell it probably won't come in at more than £40 and may be the best brush you ever own.

Completely slipped my mind about the next New Forest offering, hold out for Fido's next release you wont be disappointed.

Antdad beat you to that thread Pig Cat, but thank you though.

As my prevoius post though, is the 404 for a tenner the same one as quoted on the vulfix site advertised for circa £40?

I have read a few good things about Fido's brushes, I may well take you up on that advice.

Can sameone point me in the direction of a thread that explains the difference between the grades of badger and the loft etc please?

Sorry for the novice questions.

The High Mountains are £45 iirc.

Still worth it no doubt, and they're getting close now ;)

Are these made by Fido?

Is Fido AKA Newforest?

Thanks for all the input so far, keep it comming, although I might become snowblind at this rate! :)

Yes Fido runs New Forest Brushes, and has a new High Mountain grade badger brush due out this month:

No.

Jonboy, it's all a blur I'm sure but you you won't be the first or last to try and decipher the brush world and try and get a bargain. Truth is that 50% of the time you get exactly what you pay for, the other 40% you don't and then the remaining 10% you get great value, the 404 "mix" from Diamond Edge falls into the later.

Don't worry about the questions. Ask away! We're all too polite here to tell you that you are stupid. ;)

If you follow this link: http://www.diamondedgeltd.com/acatalog/Progress_shaving_brushes_and_accessories.html#a760 you should find the 404 at the top of the page.

I'm sure someone will find you some info about hair grades and lofts. From what I've seen though the quality of the different hair varies considerably between each manufacturer. Fido is a good source of information (see his brush blog - link in his signature) and says that the Simpsons Chubby in Best is such good quality you shouldn't need to go for a higher grade. The Best Badger is generally one of the lower quality badger hairs so this shows that choosing a brush isn't that straightforward. Confused? I am! :?
