The brand was Sunster, the razors were all made by Merkur for Hoffritz Cutlery Co in NY. They had at least the slant you picture, the Merkur 11c & the Merkur travel razor. Far as I know they all came in their own case, similar to the photo and had slightly different hatching patterns from the Merkur originals. I've got a 1950s Hoffritz travel razor in its wee case and it is virtually identical to the current Merkur. The actual model Hoffritz which Mr. Fleming used would have been equivalent to our Merkur 11c. Since the razor his creation Bond uses replaces and is so much better than the heavy toothed Gillette it would probably be the heavy, open combed rebranded 11c which the author favoured.

Strange how I can recall stuff from the 60s no problem, yet I just know I've got at least 3 cups of cold coffee abandoned somewhere round the house and no idea where they are !

Cheers for the info matey, just really like the look of it, are the modern Merkurs good quality ??? tried some of the Blades and they were poop
would like a modern one if it looks like this, but not if quality is poo

The Merkurs are, my view, absolute examples of fine German engineering through & through Sunny. The 11c is a heavy duty model which looks as if it was a vehicle it would be an armoured car ! If you like open comb razors then I rate this as one of the very best. The current Merkur slant is effectively the razor which you are looking at in the Hoffritz case. Once again this is a really well built piece of kit, when you hold one of these you know you're handling a solid bit of precision machinery. Some feel that the slant is a tad aggresive, however I used a long handled version coupled with Feather blades for years with gr8 pleasure. I'm guessing that many others will be able to give you their own experiences with the Merkur range, I'll be surprised if any have negative views. You could always pick up a metal razor case keeping your eyes open , pop the 11c in it & you've got an ersatz "James Bond" razor ; albeit without that desireable Hoffritz stamp. ;)

All the Best.

Nice one cheers matey, just bought myself an EJ DE89L so must stop spending....but i'm going into london Saturday and i feel i may be "seduced
by the dark side of the force" !! and come back with a Merkur too !

Resistance is futile ; go on, you know you're worth it ! After all, if you don't like the look & feel of the Merkur you can "Just Say No". (I bet you wont though !)

Nice razor I think James Bond would like it but did James Bone use a slant Ian fleming was a man of detail and he would not have left out such a detail. On bodger & badger a chap was talking about this and I'm inclined to agree with him. but a nice looking razor the closest thing to the James Bond razor is probably the Merkur 11c it'll give a smooth shave for a smooth spy :p

Yep, heavy-toothed Hoffritz is mentioned in one book and he even goes as far as to say it is better than Gillette.

I thought so, there is one still available for about £50. Slant not OC.

Yep,

  • 69.75 USD = 46.3075 GBP[/list:u]

... though it depends on what they call 'a little bit more' if it ain't CONUS.

Lovely razor, but your signature image is giving me flashbacks!

... er, or one could go here, I suppose.

  • I can't remember if he has any forum discounts on to help out even more, though.
    • ... last offer from there I can remember was some "dada day" thing or whatsi-whosis.[/list:u][/list:u]
