Golden Nib Finest Extra badger

I use mainly boar. Anyone here have experience with Tony's Finest Extra badger at the Golden Nib?

I'm considering 20, 22 and 24 in Extra respectively. I might even entertain 18 mm finest since I have positive experience with the TGN knot boar in 20 and 24 knots ( 22 cream is yet to be placed on handle ). However I haven't enough experience with badger to make sound decision.

Tip softness is the least on mind because that's given with badgers. Stiffness and density are of prime concern.

My limited experience with Silvertips has led me to decide on grade or two lower at TGN. OEM brushes I've tried are Omega 599, Vulfix 2273 and TGN 22 in custom brush ( have 24 and 26 but haven't used ).

It never occurred to me coarse shaft would exist in higher grade badger. Then again I never saw fit to pay exorbitant amount to find out theory. If anything the only one that has met the aforementioned attributes is Vie-Long 16590 black badger. It has softness of their Silvertips or Super Badger according to Best Grooming Tools description.

I don't have any of Vie-Long's Silvertip nor do I have their Best badger grade-Gray badger to confirm that but am glad 16590 surpassed my expectations. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Ivan, these are great value for money knots. This one is a 22mm knot set at 49mm, finished knot dia = 24mm. It works well.

Ian,

Are you planning on picking up more knots? If so would you consider 20 and 24 finest extra?

How's your butterscotch coming along?

Yep...

The knot is soft, scrubby and very dense, it does genuinely work efficiently with both soap's and creams and
has a unique feel amongst my badger brushes, I like it a lot.

It is coming along well, very well. I am considering having a 20mm knot set at 45mm, maybe a bit less~

Crappy crackberry pic....

Ian,

That's certainly come alive! Looks like 24 is out of the question. At this point I think I'll go with 20 and 22 extra. Maybe even an 18 Finest no stuffing.

Hell even my Omega 599 silvertip has bloomed beyond my expectations! With specs of 48 loft and 30 base at 18 knot it's not that bad. I'll have to take into account other boars with loft height that served me well and decide an appropriate height. Then take into account the way badger blooms at ginourmous rate.

antdad,

Thank you for insghtful post! Bookmarked thread as well.

Unfortunately no re-knotting for me. I don't have the necessary tools. I've 3 pending a buddy's making for me. I could place the knot myself but that would mean I would be stuck with whatever the glue plug is set at. It would be best for him to do it.

Ivan,

There are Neo, Beeyay & Henk, all of whome live here once in a while. These fella's will gladly help you out. If you are in the land of...the us of a, then contact Rudy Vey, a gent & a scholar.

I've made a number of these knots into brushes in 24mm and the feedback has always been good. Fido has one, as do a number of other prolific posters on here.

I've also got one sat here beside me to make a brush for myself... must actually get round to it at some point....

As well as the 24mm knot brush made by Neo, I have this humble oak handled brush made by my local woodturner. It is the 22mm x 65mm with extra hair by TGN set at 52mm loft. It does a great job.

I have one of Neo's custom finest 2 band. 24mm with extra hair, set at about 52mm. I love it, would certainly recommend trying one out!!
Its the same as the fido LE (see his blog).

Gentlemen:

Thank you so much for your input!

Fido,

That brush is beautiful! Have you any in smaller knots? I don't think I saw any on your site.

Ivan

I have three brushes with a 20mm knot:

The brushes made in oak using bought in knots were an experiment to assess the feasibility of having hand made brushes produced here in the New Forest. My woodturner is keen but I want to see how my first New Forest Superior Badger brushes are received before diversifying!
