Everything was fine until...

Last Thursday I felt a little nipping pain in my back and found it to be just a common spot.

By finishing time on Friday, I was in some considerable discomfort. With bruising and swelling.

By Saturday evening I was in quite a lot of pain and had a lump the size of a golfball on the right side of my back.

Sunday I call NHS24 who tell me to dress it and take painkillers and go see the Nurse on Monday. Which I did.

I now have a bona fide abcess on my back and it hurts like a mother.... I haven't felt pain like this for years. Got a proper GP appointment tomorrow and a 2nd appointment with the nurse. Looks like my back may be getting a considerable slicing, or whatever they do, tomorrow.

It fucking sucks, the pain and discomfort is unreal.

Anyone else ever had one of these? If so what happened?

Andy

P.S. No "well basically........ you're dying" posts. Blood poisoning isn't on the cards yet I hope.

About 25-30 years ago my old man had one diagnosed on his neck and the wonderful NHS gave him an appointment to have it lanced (in about 3 months time) - about 3 days before the appointed day, he nicked it whilst shaving, a load of goop fell out, the smell made him puke but the whatever it was was gone and healed fully before the op...

Ha ha that sounds familiar......... ever remember Billy Connolly sketch "You never see people with neck lumps anymore"

Yea well this has been "weeping" already and have had to replace the drawing plaster the nurse put on a few times already but it keeps swelling up again.

Thats pretty full on but can I tell you something? As bad as that clip looks, the thought of getting that done to my back brings a feeling of relief. Thats how I know its bad.

HM, you've obviously never seen a nurse from Motherwell.

I have, ahem!

Are you trying to draw it and get it to pop yourself?

......... if they say they'll prick your boil make sure they don't reverse the procedure.

I'll be sure of that, Im hoping it will just be an affair for antibiotics but it is so painful I am genuinely scared of some burly nurse trying to squeeze it.

It has already burst and I got these patches/dressings which draw the contents and keep them in the dressing but the dressings keep "filling up" I'd hope it goes away as quick as it came.

HM if you have taken on a nurse from Motherwell and survived then you are a great man ;)

Can't they use local anaesthetic for these things?? I had a 'fatty deposit' in my abdomen some years back. It was like a hard lump under the surface with a tiny blackhead top. They removed it in hospital with local anaesthetic, and no pain was felt. The surgeon insisted on showing it to me afterwards; a solid looking lump of fatty stuff about the size of haf a thumb. I was amazed that this thing had been living inside me, and glad to be shot of it.
Sounds like your affliction is a lot more painful Andy. Hope it is now sorted out, and that the nurse was gentle with you.

Sometimes the formation of boils are symptomatic of a more underlying problem, its good to be getting it checked out properly.

The application of heat, hot baths can also help.

Well back from the Docs with more antibiotics than you can shake a stick at.

According to the Doc and Nurse the fact that it's weeping is a good sign and it looks like it's gonna heal ok. Antibiotics will help get rid of the swelling and therefore the pain and been given extra dressings to put on and make sure it's kept clean etc etc.

Downside is that I have to go back next week and possibly have it "scraped" out and packed if such is needed and in the long run, if there is still a lump I may have to go get it taken out.

Feeling a bit better though from just having it looked at.
