Testers wanted - not for Vegetarians

I'm wondering if it's down to the hardness of the water Sharon? I'm based on the outskirts of London, where the water is very hard.

I've used ‘The Beef' (I do hope this is just the working title!) for 5 consecutive days using a Cobra Classic with a Feather Pro.

I scooped the 25g sample into a larger tub so I could load from it and was surprised just how soft it is. I'd expected something similar to the Signature but this is much closer to Original / Olive Oil in texture, having soap this soft does make loading harder when there isn't much in the tub as I find the brush pushes the soap about rather than picking it up. However, at the very end it does mean one can just scoop out a blob stuff it into the bottom of a bowl and lather that way.

Day 1
Only used The Beef.
The lather was OK for slickness but a bit thin and started to break-down too quickly.

Day 2
The Beef on the RHS of my face and Signature on the LHS.
On day 1 I'd assumed that The Beef was closer to Signature in how it should be used than Original. That resulted in a ‘good' shave but not up to the usual NSS standards (which for me are at the top of the pile.) On day 2 I used this soap as I would Original: MORE product, MORE air and far LESS water. Bingo. Thick, slick and better than the Signature on the LHS of my face.

Day 3
As above.

Day 4
The Beef on the RHS of my face and Olive Oil on the LHS.
Marginally slicker than the Olive Oil NSS, but very, very close.

Day 5
Only used The Beef.
It's so good it doesn't actually feel like it's cutting. The only way I know it's working is because the razor is making a lot of noise!

I really like this soap. It lathers easily and is slick. A firmer texture would make loading easier but if it remains this soft then the deeper tubs would most certainly be beneficial. I can't comment on skin feel / conditioning as it feels no different to either the results I get from Signature or the Olive Oil, plus I always use a ASL and moisturiser.

Those who have had issues with slickness & cushion seem to be those who have stated that it's a thirsty soap. I'm not sure it is, but it does need to be worked. Try more product but less water.

Thanks Paul, and again I'm just getting more and more confused. I too when I first made this thought it would be very solid like Signature, and was surprised at how soft it turned out. From my point of view that's a good thing, as working with Signature and getting it into the tins is a real PIA.
What do people think for a name? All ideas welcome.

I like the soft nature of the soap personally. "The Beef" and P&B soaps are very similar in their consistency, easy (for me anyway) to load, easy to scoop should you want to in order to transfer from tub to bowl/scuttle/other tub.

If it went to a vote for the name, I do like "The Beef". It works on many levels. Firstly the bovine tallow, secondly beef is a quintessentially English Sunday meal. Third is that anything beef is good, except no beef, which brings me full circle. It needs to be called The Beef as no beef is bad! :D

The closest association I'd want my shaving soap to have with foodstuffs / bovine would be to call it Prime and I'm not massively fond of that name. I don't think there's any need to ram home the idea that a soap contains Tallow.

Hi Paul thanks for the review, out of interest how much product roughly did you use?

OK, I have figured out why you preferred domestic testers, Sharon.. People are trying out the tweef before I have even received the original beef. Look forward to testing for my own interest if perhaps a bit late to the party for reporting back for your purposes. Glad to see the positive trend in reviews, though!

To the rest of you testers: how do you load? Do you transfer the contents of the sample tins to bigger ones? I find that no matter which soap, if loading from a, say, <6cm diameter container, the lather invariably suffers.

Scooped out of the tub and placed in the centre of the knot. Water added to the top and swirled around the face if using a badger. If using a boar I would scoop, press onto the base of the scuttle and build.

Basically enough to (very) densely fill the first 15mm of the knot. This morning I used a Chubby 2 Super. I probably used a lump the size of my (medium sized) thumb.

I decant the sample into a bigger tub or direct into the lather bowl. I only bowl lather.

Keep 'em coming guys, I can't say any so far are leaping out at me. I've sent out samples of the tweeked version to JayGee, Nathan, Nishy, Missingskin and Bechet, plus another customer. So we'll see what they make of those, and for those who tried untweeked, what if any difference they can tell.
