Don't doubt yourself. Go slow and steady. The key is to drill into the knot to break it up and then chip the rest of it out. Clean up with a drum sander attachment on a drill/Dremel. I've done a number of brushes with simply a hand drill, spade bit (20mm) and sanding drums.
