Faultless Friday.
Good weekend all......

So as I mentioned earlier I was going to start a run through the various Super Speeds in the collection from 48-69. I started off with the Milord and snuck a Muhle R41 and Merkur 34G in when no one was looking! So back we go down the line. Today's ritual involved the venerable though often maligned 1951 Black Tip SS. This particular razor is in fine condition and is the aluminum handle version. It is one of the first SS acquired by me and comes courtesy of a buddy in Texas. Come to think of it, I have a bunch of his razors! Many have commented that this SS is too light or too mild to be efficient. Loaded up with a Perma-Sharp Super, Kai, Nacet etc, this razor is superb. Sharp blade, mild razor equals success. Today was no exception.

Soap of the day is new to the den but I do enjoy the other Tcheon Fung Sing soap I have in rotation that was listed in my previous SOTD. This one is from their Linea Intenso collection and is called Ginestra di Taormina. The scent is phenomenal and incorporates Sicilian Broom Flower with sweet citrus, moss and floral notes. It is spring and summer in a tub. Performance is excellent and you will be impressed, I certainly was.

Lathered up from the tub with my Simpson Colonel and proceeded to get on through a fantastic, three pass BBS shave. Topped it off with the matching aftershave balm and decided to add a little extra.

I was pif'd a bottle of Myrsol Aqua Balsamica a while back and I love using it in place of AS or balms that incorporate lavender, violet or rose scents in them. The Myrsol AB is exceptional in my opinion but at times hard to match to a soap. Well this soap is it's “Brother-from-another-mother”.

It's Friday and this was an exceptional shave and start to a much needed weekend. Take care, safe travels and happy shaves all!

Brush - EJ Best Badger
Pre - Floïd Pre-shave Oil
Razor - Muhle R41
Blade - Gillette Platinum (1)
Soap - TOBS Eton
ASB - Floïd Bálsamo
ASL - Floïd Suave

80 hours growth to take down and the first time with my Floïd software and Gillette Platinum.

I love the R41. I could feel the blade on my WTG pass and I could have walked away from the first pass with a more than acceptable shave. I decided to skip the XTG pass and go straight to ATG for my second pass. So different to the Superspeed but I love this razor. Minimal Alum feedback and a BBS from 2 passes.

I'm wondering if I could use the R41 as a regular razor (every other day). It's yet to bite me and the finish is always comfortable so I don't see why not.

Absolutely, Mike. It's similar to the ‘open comb razors are more aggressive than closed' argument. While it may have some substance, I think efficiency (aggressiveness) is more dependant on gap between blade and comb/bar. As you know, the Streamline is closed; but it's not exactly shy. The R41 too. By contrast, I find the Gillette New comparatively tamer than other OCs. Then there's the Gillette Red Tip: it can bite too, even with its closed bar. And, of course, there's the Schicks; E2,and E3. You can see daylight between blade and bar.
This correlates nicely to my SOTD. I lived in fear of my R41 but found it's actually a joy to use. I won't be so scared of my other razors now.

Moss Anniversary Slate scuttle
Rooney 3/1 Faux Horn Finest (22/48)
Penhaligon's Castile shaving cream (vintage)
Wolfman WR1-SB Antique Bronze/Darwin
Wilkinson 'Light Brigade' (6)
Penhaligon's Castile aftershave (vintage)

Castile is one of the all-time greats. I enjoy both the cream and aftershave every time, and the excellent razor/blade combination really highlights the quality of the lather.

Friday 3rd May (pm)

Cold Water Shave
Heno de Pravia Glycerine Soap
Tabac Shave Stick
Shavemac Pure Badger Brush
Feather AC SS with a Feather Super Pro (#9)
Alum and Rinse
Dove Moisturiser
Tabac EDC

It could have been my new Kai Captain Standard razor but the Royal Mail were confused and delivered a ransom note for customs and administration charges instead.
The blade is coming near the end of its life....so 3 passes for a BBS finish:)

Soap: MDC
Razor: Wade & Butcher 13/16
Brush: Razorock Synth
Post: S.V. Stella Alpina
EDT: LOccitaine CADE

I just had the perfect evening shave after nearly six days without even touching a razor. The heft and sublime hone of this razor said good bye to my whiskers with ease.
Three glorious passes with the top of the tree MDC. This newly acquired brush is super soft though lacking in that all important backbone for me. Its a keeper purely down to the fact that I love the design and its great for pics.
:)

First time use of the S.V. Stella Alpina. A sample so kindly gifted to me by @p.b . Thank you very much Paul. The scent really appeals to me so now I am going to buy the soap and of course matching balm. Truly enabled.
The Cade finished the whole experience off quite nicely.

Have a great Bank Holiday weekend.

Oh brave Sir, I agree that the R41 is a wonderful and efficient razor, I know because I own one. However, as good a she is and keen as you are it is designed to mow em down. If but a days growth is what you want to give her she just might lull you into complacency...it won't end well. The R41 was my second razor and I spent many hours perfecting the technique I have with it. If it is to be your daily driver all kidding aside, pick a mild blade that is comfortable to use daily ala Personna Lab Blue or whatever super smooth blade you enjoy.

That's good feedback for the 41. I have steered clear because of its aggressive (efficient) rep. I will still wait though. A genuine careful 2 pass shave is enough for me on most occasions, especially with an efficient tool.
Nice one.
