World cup Bid

I know we're a fanatical footballing nation but is it right that our goverment is prepared to bow to FIFA's demands in order to win the bid?
Breaking or ignoring laws that will allow FIFA:-

"full UK entry-visa clearance and a tax saving worth hundreds of millions of pounds".

"the unrestricted import and export of all foreign currencies to and from the UK, as well as the unrestricted exchange and conversion of these currencies into US dollars, euros or Swiss francs".

And of course knowingly deal with a blatantly corrupt organisation and use high profile personalities such as Cameron, Lord Coe. Prince William, and Beckham in the process.

Personally I think UK should have walked away from the whole process and insisted on a full investigation into FIFA's affairs.
I also think that like the Olympics, the World Cup, if we win the bid, will cost the UK taxpayer a fortune.
Makes me wonder what our government sees as its priorities going forward.

Cameron and Clegg??   inexperienced to**ers

What's this I'm reading?

I'm a simple soul, focused on the joy that bringing the World Cup to England will bring.

As long as I get my par, I don't care if the drive bounced back off a wall onto the fairway, the second flew along the ground, I cock up the next and hole out from 30 yards.

When I am in sports mode, reason takes a break, and it's about winning.

I'm with beejay on this one. These things are always sold to the people as being a privilege to host and/or a point of prestige.

Off hand, I can't think of a single one of these types of things that's been worth the faff, the cost, or the disruption. Usually they drain the coffers and resources, tie up emergency services and help the rich and corrupt become more rich and corrupt.

  • Not being a great fan of sports, it's possibly one of the few times I can whole-heartedly, actually fairly happily, and pretty much in good conscience, take on the role of a NIMBY. [/list:u]

Back the Bid*? Smooch the Arse, more like.
    • * Sheffield's slogan for the folks who wnat to have Sheffield host 2018 World Cup - I think it's World Cup ... one of those over-hyped things featuring over-paid & under-performing prima donnas sometimes referred to as 'professional athletes'.[/list:u]

... but maybe that's just me.

What do the bookies know?

Let's see.. they also had England as near shoo-ins for winning it in South Africa, and look where that took us.

Could there be more than a little distortion due to inflated self-esteem leading to Ladbrokes target market betting more optimistically on England.

I found myself not caring if The World Cup comes here or not. I also feel a similar apathy about the 2012 Olympics.

It's not that I dislike sport, but to me, both events are being promoted and pushed by people who's enthusiasm is fuelled by money, and not by sport.

I totally agree - only I;m worrying about the Netherlands (who are also bidding :-( ), rather than the UK...

Don't worry Henk. Not even the members of Holland-Belgium bid team appeared to think they stand any chance of winning.
