Supermarket meat

Just waiting for my Weber kettle, thermometers and cowboy hat to arrive so I can do it long and slow...

WARNING: THIS VIDEO IS LONG & SLOW, a bit too much sauce for my liking but you get the idea.

I've stopped buying meat from the supermarket. We have a chest freezer in the garage which, although it was quite expensive to buy, costs pence to run (it's AAA rated) and we fill it with produce from the local farms.

I get my lamb from http://www.farmerphilbond.co.uk/ and have yet to taste any better. It's superb and very reasonably priced per kilo (he sells half lambs or a full one). Phil will also deliver around the country, but there are plenty of other lamb farmers around the UK.

I also get Aberdeen Angus from another farmer and used to buy an eighth of a bullock. However, beef joints are very expensive and I eventually figured out that stewing steak, beef skirt, chuck steak etc (the cheapest cuts basically) taste fantastic when slow cooked with onions, garlic and gravy for about 10 hours and a kilo (around £7 - £8) feeds four easily.

Plus, more importantly, it's directly supporting the local farmers and means they aren't being ripped off by the evil supermarkets. When a farmer is gone, they are gone forever, and are too valuable to lose IMHO.

I don't know if this link will work without going through our work discount site but there is a good deal on for Donald Russell meat

well went to a butchers in carcroft today, his window display was perfection and let me taste several cooked meats, pork pies, talked for a good 45mins and he told me where everthing comes from and said he would offer a good discount for regular customers, when it comes to pork pies im very fussy :) he told me he had won several awards for best pork pies and after tasting them i could see why, spent a bloody fortune as got a family meal on sunday so we will see what the lamb i got is like..

Well, that sounds promising Slash. Mind you, it seems like every one horse town in Yorkshire has a purveyor of prize winning pork pies - hell, there's even one here in Keighley (Midgeley's - established sometime in the reign of Edward I apparently ... all right that's a lie). Best so far: the butchers at the bottom of the hill in Pateley Bridge, where there's generally a crowd of bikers tucking in, so can't be bad.

Probably one for Southerners as delivery is free within the M25 for orders over £25 or a fiver for under. I went to BBQ dinner where they were serving some of this company's offerings and then placed an order myself, exemplary both times.

Even if you are not a meataholic it's good to be able to buy proper sized Porterhouse, onglet and marrow and even fillet on the bone which is new to me, they even tell you what breed of animal they are currently butchering should you have a preference.

Very well hung and treated meat which I find to be much more crucial than an organic stamp recommended for a treat or if there isn't a good butcher near you.
