its almost aways better to use to much water then to little. try this, soak your brush then just pinch it alittle and then give it a good swirl when you load it with the soap. then splash some water on your face right before you build up a lather with the brush by swirls in the face and end with coat painting with it.

2nd and 3rd pass a little messy as started touching up here and there instead of sticking to a structure and lead to a little irritation that soon settled down.
 
Stretching the skin is very important with a straight so dry fingers are a must. If you apply lather carefully and stretch from above the lather then move your fingers down as you shave, you should always be touching dry skin which makes stretching so much easier.

A great thing to add to you shaving gear is a alum block/stick. just put some on your fingers and you will have super grip in your face when you strech the skin ;)
