"Skyfall" New Bond Film

Well, the books may well be better (I expect they probably are) but don't you feel the slightest bit inquisitive to find out? Daniel Craig's bond isn't a buffoon by any stretch.

They are all available on Sky On Demand, and I'm off work all next week so I might give one or two a try.

Saw Skyfall last night with my 11 year old son.
He loved it.
I loved it.
Daniel Craig, best Bond ever IMHO. Tough, ruthless, not cheesey.

I took my 11 year old son to. He loved it, I thought it was great, like you say or too cheesey and also not too dark.

Next up for our father son adventures will be Southampton V Reading on the Saturday and Band Of Skulls in Concert on the following Sunday. He's a lucky lad I do more with him than my father every use to with me. When he's old enough he's been told I'm buying him his first pint and a DE is lined up for him too.

i've seen it twice now. Loved it so much the first time, that i went back to see it the next day.

I think in line with the books. Craigs bond is Dark, violent and stands quite alone. But they don't ram these elements down your throat too much, so its a nice balance.

Also.. best bond baddie ever!!

Saw it, loved it! Best Bond movie in the past decade. Perhaps even my lifetime. Can't say for sure as I don't remember the first 15 years too well.

+1 to Best baddie ever.

Also, worst Bond girl ever. Although to be fair, the real "Bond girl" was really Judy Dench (M), so I guess there really wasn't any Bond girl this film, which is interesting. Really liked all the throwback references.

also as a bit of a clothes geek, i was surprised (and pleased) to see James wearing Crockett & Jones shoes throughout. Including a style that I own myself. Now time for that Omega Seamaster!

ach its a very stylish movie. It wears its look well, and fills each screen moment with both cinematographic and fashion elegance. The soundtrack here is sparce and atmospheric for a Bond movie and having now seen it several times with various friends, I feel it gets better each time. Sam mendes managed to pack a lot of detail into each shot.

The only OBVIOUS pieces of product placement in the movie are 1) his Omega watch near the beginning, its a full on zoom shot on nothing but the timepiece and feels a little staged and 2) the Jaguar XJL used throughout is clearly deliberately placed (although the XJL is the car of choice in that industry, so maybe not so "placed")

plus... theres a scene with a shaving brush and a straight :)

I've watched bits and pieces of them when they've been on TV. The Bond in the books is a cold, dark and violent loner but from what I've seen, the Bond in the films is a bit of a one-line cracking buffoon.

Just saying, like.

You're 100% right - but not for the "rebooted" Daniel Craig movies. Casino Royale was a deliberate break with the tradition, and enormously the best film of the franchise - a proper film with character development, depth, acting, and other stuff you don't expect from the likes of Roger Moore. QoS was a bit of a mess, though I enjoyed its bitter, anger-driven Bond - again close to Fleming's.

I loved Skyfall, which for me had all the emotional richness and charge of Casino Royale, a powerful arc for some other characters, acknowledgment of Bond's aging, of the changing nature of his work post-cold-war, and a wonderfully-played villain with a comprehensible motive. And some nods to tradition, which I enjoyed but which didn't intrude. I think it may be the best of the lot as entertainment - though CR is better art.

I really don't think you'd regret seeing Casino Royale; for me, it does the book honour. Stay well clear of the pre-Craig ones, though.

Thanks, Paul. I'm available for weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, and after-dinner speaking :).

I always thought Roger Moore played Bond as the Saint of the latter books - not Charteris's heart-felt early ones, full of recklessness and righteousness, bravado and suppressed anger, but lighter and all surface. And he played the Saint as a clown, damn him.

You can do a lot better for your money.

Stowa, Nomos and TimeFactors for a start.

Micro-brands which are all as good if not better than Omega and anything between 15-35% of the price. (A "Swiss" watch costs about £150 - £200 to make; the dealers buy them at ±50% of the retail price.)

For a cheap seamaster... I'd have a longines hydoconquest.

Same build quality as an omega but 700 quid ish, to buy.it even has similarly impressive heritage as a brand.

But what you're getting with the omega is the coaxial movement. The other brands are just using standard ETA movements. The omega is expensive, but it is a proper classic

Wife and daughter going to see that new Twilight teen vampire film tonight. Can't be bothered with that, so will be watching Skyfall with my sons instead.

Haven't seen a Bond film at the pictures since the Rodger Moore days, and the submarine Lotus.
