Just got a email from GFT regarding these...

I wonder who makes them? The handles are spitting images of simpsons Dukes and Chubbys so I'm thinking simpsons?

They do look quite nice though.

Not Simpson that's for sure, the Young's must be crying into their lather bowls.

Why would be crying into our lather bowls?!

Brushes being sold for Simpson prices, with Simpson names and handle styles that aren't Simpson brushes. It does go to show how much the industry has changed in the last 20 years.

Mark from Simpson/Vulfix confirmed that they're not on another forum. Bit cheeky to copy the handle shapes and the names.

It would certainly be worth having a word with Trumper's, the site describes them as Chubby's. That is deliberate form of Passing Off, it's more than cheeky.

I've never seen a Progress Vulfix brush with a "Tramp Stamp" so I just didn't think they'd made them, Jim with respect you could or should have trademarked the "Chubby style" when you had the chance and it was distinctive.

Vulfix did make Trumper branded brushes.

Check out the Trumper site the Chubby 'description' has now been dropped.

We had patents and copyrights on many handle designs. The Chubby has been copied many times over many many years. To be honest though I would have expected something like this from a different kind of retailer not what I would class (once anyway!) as an 'old friend'. I know that Mark and Philip Watterson are not happy at all with this situation.

IMO they have the look of a moulded handle rather than a turned one, I wonder if Frank had anything to do with it!

I would agree that they don't look turned and also the head doesn't have the Chubby look.

I see. I was quite missled seeing those names and handle shapes. I thought straight away, are those vulfix/simpsons made?

I wouldn't be too pleased at them using exact name.

The biggest issue would be where and how these current brushes are made. If these are machine made brushes they are being pitched at a price comparable to an actual Simpson handmade Chubby and are therefore creating a massive profit margin potential.

The first brushes are the same shape as the Vulfix 2234 for a start:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://fidosshavingbrushblog.blogspot.com/2010/02/vulfix-2234-super-badger.html">http://fidosshavingbrushblog.blogspot.c ... adger.html</a><!-- m -->

They have just etched two rings instead of one below the middle to create the GFT lookalike.

As for the Chubby:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://fidosshavingbrushblog.blogspot.com/2010/02/simpson-chubby-2-best.html">http://fidosshavingbrushblog.blogspot.c ... -best.html</a><!-- m -->

The GFT version has the same shape as this, but an etched ring just above the middle.

I wanted a short fat handle for my Tubby brushes but at least my more angular right angle shape showed I respected the original Chubby shape well enough not to attempt an obvious copy.

I don't think many forum shaving enthusiasts will be buying the GFT brushes at their prices. On second thoughts........ There may be a gullible few?

And don't Trumpers know that aficionados are interested in knot sizes?

There will no doubt be purchasers. I would say that is a sure bet, but probably not from learned shavers.
Your handle design is not a mirror image of our original design, whereas this clone....well!

I am sure these 'new' (and I use the term extremely loosely) brushes will invoke plenty of discussion over the coming days.
