Apples, like all fresh produce will vary in quality from season to season, when they are harvested, how they are stored & etc.
All things being equal, I like Cox, Russet, Worcester Pearmain, and Spartan, plus, of course, Bramleys for cooking.

It occurs to me that you guys know nothing about a Chicago company (Affy Tapple) that uses apples in a now very familiar way. Yep, all sorts of designer coatings now, but back in the day these were the ones to buy when available. They seem to taste like they always did and sorta remind me of my childhood. I will always have a few during the season.
You will see em in lots of stores for maybe 2 months selling for $1 each and then that's it till next year. Yeah, they don't have a crazy good shelf life and you learn to check the 'sell by' date all the time. The apples can get a bit sad so you gotta be careful and even then hope for the best. When they're fresh and have tart crisp apples and nuts with all their taste.....whew, it's pretty good.
I figure there's maybe 2-3 weeks left.

Cider ! But not that American Cider that's alcohol free, that's Apple juice. I learnt the other day that proper cider over there, with an alcohol content is called Hard Cider.
