Align the blade with the top cap not the base plate, right?

I guess that must be right as on a razor with tight tolerances that's all you could do. On a Fatip you have options....

It's been asked a million times, but I've seen posts arguing both cases....

Yes.

With a well-made razor like the Merkur, you don't bother. Just pop the blade onto the cap, lower the body of the razor, tighten up and while just still a little slack give it a jiggle holding the razor upside down and by the end. Tighten up. Job jobbed every time.

There's a reason if the normal razors do not cover lateral tabs of the DE blade.
So It's easy to adjust the aligning by hands. As usual ...
