Saint Charles shave creams

Hi all,

I was just wondering if any of you guys have used there creams?

I've got blueline menthol and struggling to get a half decent lather out of it.

Are there creams just poor or am I doing something wrong?

My technique is the typical almond size blob in a mug and slowly add a few tea spoons of water and it does get somewhere, it's just very thin and bubbly.

This same technique makes trumpers, palmolive and boots shaving cream explode so I'm quite confused!

Interesting. I thought it was just me !
I have the Oakmoss Lavendula cream after reading rave reviews on B+B and it reacts the same way for me in a bowl or face lathering.
I'll experiment some more when my New Forest brush arrives but compared to any of the three Taylors or Body Shop or EJ soap it is definitley the hardest to get going and the lather doesn't last.

That's true, if you can get something half decent, it will disappear quite quick.

You think it's worth mixing it with another cream? I'm thinkin menthol parmolive. Or you think it would be a waste of time?

I've never tried mixing creams so I couldn't really comment.

The odd thing is I really don't want to give up on it as it seems strange that someone has worked hard to make a specialist product that doesnt really work so I assume I am doing something wrong.

Is anyone else having any success with these creams?

I sent a email to scs but never got a reply. Shame that.

I think I'll try again and use double the amount of cream. See how this works.

Fingers crossed!

If in doubt start with less rather than more water. You can't take excess water away but you can always add more. I tend to start with a squeezed-out brush and then gradually add more water as I face lather with a very quick dip under a running hot tap. This way once I reach a point where the lather feels good I can stop and have a shave. For subsequent passes (for me no more than two more) I just add a few drops more to the brush which mainly serves to heat the lather up but I actually like a runnier lather for the final stages as I can see what I'm doing more. Hope this helps.

PS I'd be surprised if the problem is with SCS as I've heard good things about it. At worst it should provide an acceptable lather.

I have started with just a damp brush and added drops and still the lather never really explodes. Almost half the tub has been used now and I would say I've had better shaves off my 85p boots cool cologne cream then this stuff. Its quite frustrating as I don't know what else to do!

Maybe divide the rest in small samples and send them around so we can test it all for latherability?

I thought it was just me!

I have their 'smoke and beads' flavour and I also struggle to get anything decent from it.

Which is a shame because it smells gorgeous!

SCS creams are harder to work with than other shaving creams. They aren't mass produced like TOBS etc and this makes them a completely different product. They require much less water than other creams - usually a really well shaken out brush will have plenty to work with and you wouldn't add any more. Use a normal amount of cream, maybe a little bit more than normal, and then whip like crazy.

It won't explode with lather like other creams and it does fade quicker than other creams but it's the slickest thing out there and your razor will really glide - it leaves skin feeling amazing.

If anyone has bought SCS from us any has tried it over and over and really don't like it then let us know and we'll refund it.

I've just had another go with less water and had a really good shave, thanks!

That said, it probably won't be on my to buy again list as I prefer a lather 'explosion'. Shame as it has a great smell to it :(

I've got the mint chocolate and sun-bleached wood creams, and I find lathering to be almost impossible.

I've tried using all sorts of water:cream ratios but it just isn't happening. Which is a huge shame, as I love the scents of them. It either sits on my face like plaster or, by adding just a tiny bit more water, just falls into the sink like milk. It seems to require such an exact amount of water, or it is virtually unusable.

Or maybe I'm no good at lathering....

I've managed to get a reasonable lather by soaking the surface of the cream with 5-10ml (appx) warm water whilst soaking the brush (New Forest Silvertip). Using a well squeezed out brush heavily loaded with that water and plenty of cream I can then face lather. The lather is fine but still a little short lived.

Dipesh sent me a sample of this cream to try so he could check what a more experienced shaver ( ) could do with the stuff. I have only tried using it twice but found on both occasions it was difficult to get a decent lather from it. The second time I used more than I would usually with say TOBS or Nannys but it still failed to produce any lather of note. That said the shaves I got were decent as it still managed to lubricate fine. The scent was good too and very tingly from the menthol - a summer cream really. For me part of the pleasure of shaving is making a nice lather so I'll be giving SCS a miss in future.
