This is really interesting as I was thinking of digging out my R41 this weekend, even though when I last tried to use it I struggled to get on with it - I think it's the pre 2013 model, which may explain why. I didn't realise that the newer model was so different!

The current model is hugely different from the last model, it has been transformed, whilst a few people mastered and were able to shave with the 2011 model I genuinely believe it was the worst most uncomfortable safety razor I had ever had the displeasure to shave with.
IMHO the 2011 model was a flawed design, the thin DE blade was not held rigid because of the protrusion; with a stiff and thick inflexible SE blade (GEM or wedge) this is not an issue but with a thin DE blade it certainly is.

*****UPDATE*****Exec Shaving pre-oil
Body shop Macca root
SV 2.0 badger's bum
ATT M2
Alum block
Extro Bay Rum
New soap today,...lathered up a treat...impressed.
On debut as well was the M2 loaded with a Gillette yellow.
The user reviews are spot on regarding this razor, the angle of attack is critical, more so than any of the few I've tried.....on most of the easy surfaces it didn't feel as if it was doing much, but it's deceiving,...so smooth for the large part but I struggled to find the angle in the difficult bits.
I'll put that down to technique, or lack of it.
It is a beautiful razor to use especially when you realise that you're actually shaving and not just scraping lather off.
The alum rub was ..bracing,...given I had quite a few weepers, mostly skin blemishes I must add.
Cade A/S balm and a splash of Extro did wonders.
Thoughts on the blade anyone?.....
Cheers,...The Toff.
GreetingsThanks Dick.
Is there any way of ascertaining for sure whether the model is 2011 or not? I ask as I got it a number of years ago, but can't for the life of me remember when!
Greetings
The only way I could tell is if you put a blade in it and take a photo looking down at the top cap I could tell you by the blade exposure, there may be some other way but if there is I don't know what it is. Perhaps someone else could comment.
Regards
Dick.
P.S. I've had a surf and found this, it should help, the last picture shows the different blade exposure.
