removal of knots by steaming

Tricky one this, generally can't say without looking at the handle, but the following are indications the brush will not be suitable:

Vintage handles, not set in epoxy/glue
Anything butterscotch, handle will revert to original colour.
Anything with printing/decals on, you'll lose them.
Anything with rubberset on it, steam is useless.
Anything wooden.
Some vulfix/Simpson brushes, they use an epoxy that doesn't soften at 67ºC.

Generally modern resin handled brushes are suitable, however it's an exercise in risk!

Greg.

As for method, I use a kitchen steamer with the brush in a glass ramekin.

Steam for 10 mins, try to remove.

Continue steaming for a max of 30 mins.

Wear gloves, but you'll still get blisters!

thanks guys, i think you have answered my questions, as ll of the ones i am re-knotting are vintage, i think i will stick to my dremel, but as soon as i have a suitable one for steaming, i will use swmbo steamer and give it a go.( and i will tell her it was your idea Greg) :)
