Wanting to write something on my blog about UK brush makers, I spoke today to Brett at Progress Vulfix. What a pleasant man.
The only other well established UK brush makers are Edwin Jagger and R A Rooney although there is doubt about Rooney's operations at present. So my Duke 3, Kent BK8 and Vulfix 404 were all made in the Isle of Man where several other UK brand names are also made by Progress Vulfix. Simpsons continue to be made in the traditional way - using a very high density of badger hairs.
Before signing off I asked Brett which brush he used and why. I was most interested bearing in mind the wide range of brushes he could choose from. It is the Progress Vulfix 2234. During further research I came across this entry by a fellow blogger:

It's on it's way.

I have a feeling of deja vu here. My bell collection is based on the principle of finding world famous foundries and then collecting examples of their work. I think I'd better stick to British made shaving brushes. It will limit the damage. Just Edwin Jagger and possibly Rooney to go.

I'd be interested in what you think of the #2234...it's a softy, so why did Brett say he liked it so?

The squirt might be right though, bigger is certainly not always best.

Nothing specific - he said he just found it very comfortable to use. I'm only at risk now from one more recommendation - when I speak to Edwin.

I have written to GB Kent to ask them if they still make all their own brushes or have some of them made by another company to their specification. No reply yet. I asked T&H to confirm that their brushes were made by Rooney. I thought this was common knowledge. No reply yet.

According to their website GB Kent make all their brushes at their factory in Apsley, Hertfordshire. Doesn't quite tie in with what I have heard. We investigative reporters don't disclose sources!

It really is of no real concern who actually makes things. Having products made to your specification is a common way of operating. I'm just interested to know these things.
