Opinions on coffee

Well, used to drink a couple of pints of cafetiere coffee every day, sort of became immune to caffeine but just don't enjoy the taste at all now. Tea all day long now, love the stuff.

Errmm...no caffeine in tea then Ginger ;) .

The Gaggia classic is a nice little machine also consider the Rancillo silvia at more of a stretch...personally I'd rather drink tea than decaf coffee, same as no or low alcohol beer for me.

Decaf can be very nice, provided you find a decent roast, and it's removed using the swiss water method. [god that sounds sexual] Sumatra being a favourite.

But as a quickie i find kenco millianico damned close to the real thing,
And if im honest i just grab a cup of columbian instant, does the job for me.

If i fancy spoiling myself it's hard to beat cornish origin, though illy/lavazza are up there as well.

Any recommendations for places to get decent loose leaf online? (local shops are pish, even the large famous ones)?

As I said earlier I drink Decaf.
Decaff, yuk.

See Here

:p

its not that bad, try it some time

If I drink caffine I am bouncing off the walls all night, it really effects me

I really don't mind decaff but I have to severely restrict my coffee intake now and I have to keep it down to 1 cup a day so I make it count - extra strong cafetiere coffee mostly, or an espresso for a special treat. My Gaggia Classic is unfortunately no longer pressed into daily service :(

I seem to be the odd one out here. My coffee journey started about 20 years a go when I discovered fresh coffee and a cafetiere. I used mainly high end supermarket coffee (pre-ground) for years until about 2 years a go when I decided to buy a Gaggia machine (not cheap !!), within 2 months I realised the mistake I had made, I like a nice large mug of strong coffee in the morning and the Gaggia did not cut it for me at all so I sold it.
I should add I only have milk in coffee if I am on the road and have to use one of the well known chain stores (Starbucks etc)
So back to the cafetiere and a re-think, I wanted something more than what i could find in the supermarkets. So I found this fantastic little shop in Compton Street called The Algerian Coffee Shop. They have a fantastic choice of coffee, but more to the point the staff know what they are selling and are very helpful. I told them what I wanted from my brew and they mixed me a blend of beans. A few tweaks down the line and I have my perfect blend. I currently use a cheap blade grinder and am now going to take my next step and get a better one..............but what?
Unlike machines the grind is not quite as critical so I am not looking to spend mega bucks so you got any suggestions?

Hi there Steve! Do you use a filter? There's a new single cup filter out there, with cold in it (not as expensive as it sounds) or you have the aero presser, both are supposed to produce a very nice cup of java...

Hi Mikael, I use my cafetiere. I am looking to upgrade my grinder to give me more a more consistant grind as the blade one I use at the moment can be a bit hit and miss. the coffee blend is sorted.....:)
If you ever come back to London I will take you to The Algerian Coffee Shop, I think you will be in heaven........:icon_razz:

What's the budget? Anything quality and prosumer is going to be over a hundred quid and nearer two hundred.

Happy donkey sell the Iberital mc2 for £115....

http://www.happydonkey.co.uk/iberital-mc2-grinders.html

I've seen refurbed gaggia mdf's from Italy on fleabay for £70 or so, even direct from Italy they are £120 compared to a UK price of £199.

Aha, my bad , sometimes it gets very clear that I'm no limey.

I hear the Gaggia mdf is good and very reliable, if you could get a good used one it prob would be a nice buy ... Cheaper grinders takes for ever and sounds like mad (if you're making coffee when other people sleeps near by ...).

However, I've heard from nerds (I'm really not a coffee nerd) that hand grinders are the way to go, for other coffee than espresso and if that's a road you feel for, I think you can get a very good one for not so much £.

You know, I would love that Steve! It would be my great pleasure to meet you again and even more so if we had a good coffee (+ another shaving tour, of course).

Hi Tony, that is about my price range. Which out of the 2 would you recommend, I don't mind spending a bit more for the Gaggia if it is worth it ?

Would nice to see you again Mikael and you can get a good expresso in there for about £1.00 so good coffee and no rip off price.......:dodgy:

They are both much of a muchness tbh, I've used the mdf but only twiddled with the Iberital, both solid, competent machines.

I slightly prefer the mdf because it is a design classic but as you don't require espresso grinds and you may or may not want a doser if I were you I might opt for the Iberital but have a look at the reviews on the forums such as coffee geek.

From the reviews I think the Iberital will be the best one for me as I don't need the dosing mechanism.

Thanks for your help with this Tony, I could have ended going way over the top on price or spending less and ending up with a crappy grinder. Think this one will hit the right balance...........
