Yep, I gave in. Always wanted to make the step so last week (while spotting some good bargains) I decided that I shouldn't postpone it any longer.

Someone (was it Michael or Martin?) posted a link on which new Mac users with no experience could refer to for familiarization.

Can someone point me to that link, please? I searched TSR for the thread but didn't get good results.

Thank you.

Welcome to the club! My iMac, two Macbooks, two Apple TVs and iPhone are almost as useful as my brushes.

There must be many Apple help sites but I found the main Apple site all I need. They have excellent on line tutorials and for specific things you can post in their discussion forums.

This is the way in:

Enjoy your Mac - after years of problems with PCs it's been a revelation to me to have something so reliable.

Been a Machead for nearly 20 years.

You'll never look back.

That said, with the rise of Linux and the move by Apple to Intel processors the difference isn't quite what it was (e.g. between OSX and Vista).

But the build quality is lovely.

Good move - enjoy!

I got the supposedly old 13" Mac Book Pro (2.53 MHz if I remember correctly, 4Gb Ram, 250 hdd, etc.) at $1,099 (was reduced from $1,299 being 'overstock') with a free printer HP Photosmart and a free case. The printer I donated as I couldn't bring back with me (still working out the specifics of the donation).

Software I got was Office 2008 ($15, new version was to be in stock soon), Adobe CS5 Design Standard ($207), Final Cut Studio ($299) and Aperture 3 ($69). All full original versions (academic license).

Looks like you got a good deal, it's a 2009 model still sells for about £800.00 over here, get applecare on it if you can. I get mine off the bay not apple as this saves me about £100.00 (or more).

i'm a long term mac user. Love my macbook pro.

however have a new fav toy... was using the new 11" macbook air today. What a fantastic bit of kit. So so thin, and light. You wouldnt believe it was a fully working laptop, with a dedicated graphics chipset. Seriously great machine. I can see one in my near future

I got the stuff few hours before leaving the U.S., but forgot to get the AppleCare. They had it there, and I didn't even ask how much it was. Would it work here? I suppose it's worldwide support, but anyway now there's no point, I'm here, may get it later.

One of my classmates had the new Air, very nice indeed, slim, slick, but this one is very good for me, still getting to grips with it...

No "Home" and "End" keyboard buttons? The "Magic" mouse is excellent, though ($69)...

The applecare is top notch, especially if you have an apple store nearby.

After having a few bad experiences with 12 months guarantees on pc's I couldn't believe it when I took my 2 1/2 yr old macbook into the store and the guy apologised as they would need to get a part in and it wouldn't be ready for pickup until that evening. Picked it up that evening and he'd put on a new keyboard facia too as mine had a little crack at the bottom. Nice.

Enjoy your mac.

I don't really do any graphic/photo work but everyone I know who works in that line swears by them. Designers do seem to like a well designed product, strange.

Command + arrow keys will replace your home/end keys.

If you want to play around with linux it will dualboot ubuntu or whatever else you want beautifully.

Apple guarantees are world wide, so you can get you Macbook fixed here with no problem (if it goes wrong.....  ). If you want applecare c/w the box and cd set you can pay apple £199.00 or keep a lookout on e-bay for a re-seller.
If you google macbook shortcuts you will find all the info to help you on the apple support site or loads of mac forums that have help.

We are certainly Mac'd up in our house, would i go back? Nope, not ever. Am still considering getting the magic mouse for my MB Pro - 'cos I can. Mrs M has said if anything happened to her Pro, she will get an Air.

Aperture is a program I have been humming and ahhhing about for a while, but it's still a bit pricey over here. At $69 I would have bought in a snap ;)

I love any excuse to spend money in the Appple store.

But I'm not tempted to any upgrades yet either to a bigger screen Mac , Mac Air or the iPad. But when something does grab me, I'll go for it. I often wonder if I'm missing out on something.
