Need some gen on Gem

I've just taken delivery of a Micromatic and there is a note included with the Gem blades enclosed that states there are two kinds of Gem - shaving and industrial use. How can I tell which ones I have? My confusion stems from the fact that there are some modern type with just a card surround but there is also one that looks original as it has a brown and orange wrapper as well as the surround - it is exactly the same shape but looks completely different - the metal has patterns.

As you will have notices I'm a SE novice so any advice would be appreciated prior to the first run out at 7.00 a.m. tomorrow.

The Brown and orange wrapper blade is an original, vintage Gem blade. Worth a gold mine until you opened it! The other type is from Paul Connaught and what everyone uses/is available nowadays.

Thanks Carl - so I'm good to go. I would have pm'd you but I'm running out of space and can't be bothered to thin my inbox and sent box.

Incidentally, how does one attach a smiley? I tried copy/paste and drag/drop to no avail.

Why don't you prove to me that that's possible by attaching one in a reply. And the, just in case you are taking the piss you can add how it's really done.

In that case, dunno!

Greetings

I shaved this morning with my pushbutton GEM that I bought from Steve Sunburyboy With the razor which was NOS was a packet of GEM blades of the period, so I thought I would try one.

I can honestly say that it was the roughest blade I have ever tried to shave with and I binned it part way through the first pass before it tore up my face, it really was that bad. I replaced it with a stainless modern GEM coated blade and all was well.

These blades would have been made I assume in the 50s or 60s and I suspect they are carbon.

I tried today to purchase 100 modern GEM blades from Connaught but the most they could supply was 50 which worked out a whole lot more expensive so I will hang on untill they have the 100s back in stock.

Regards Dick

Thanks Dick. I think the one I have probably pre-dates yours so I'll leave it in pristine and go with the others that Carl and Steve sent - I aslo have an Ever-Ready that came today so that will be my combination for tomorrow.

It was your enthusiastic reports on SE that encouraged me to give it a go - so after tomorrow morning thanks may be due - or not as the case may be.

'Fraid I've got to plead guilty to that one. However you've gained your revenge as you've now got me feeling guilty and concerned by putting "just in case" .......... I'm sure that you didn't really spend last evening trying it out !

& I promise if I knew how it's done I'd tell, unfortunately I don't speak that language in which Bro Bechet explained the technique.

So, first shave with an Ever-Ready and Gem this morning - very comfortable and close with just the right amount of aggressiveness that the end result feels like a good quality straight shave.

I'm so glad I tried this as I can now mix straight/DE/SE as the mood takes me. Next on the list is a Cobra - when I can get my hands on one - if anyone reading this knows of one that's available let me have a pm.

Regards (and thanks to Dick), Rob.

p.s. JohnnyO - looks as though we are both incompetent when it comes to attaching smilies. All I know is that if I type colon, dash, right parenthesis I get this :)

To assauge my guilty conscience & since I feel I owe you one Rob, I'll pop my Cobra down to you with a few blades for you to try out for 2 or 3 weeks if you wish, although I would like it back once you know whether one is for you or not.

If you want to try it just message me an address.

Johnny that's very kind of you. I'm just waiting for a response from Executive Shaving to see if I'm on the list for the half dozen or so that's in transit to him. If not, I'll take you up on the offer as I can see that Classic Shaving in the US has them in stock at the moment but I assume that would take the usual couple of weeks.

Thanks again for your offer.
