My start with straights, a few questions..

Straights are great fun. Especially when you get into honing. Certain satisfaction that comes with being self-sufficient.
Saying that, I have recently got into DE shaving, where a feather portable+feathers seems to be a time saver when I'm in a rush :shave

I don't think we even need to encourage Ian, he'll snap. It's just a question of time.

I have snapped before, and if you buggers keep posting straight razor porn it may happen again

It's funny though, going from cartridge to DE was really learning to shave again, and now on to straights, it's a new learning curve. It's good fun though ;)

SiR-ed8 & Arrowhead, I saw that video a while ago, I think on the UK importers site for Theirs, no?
He makes it look so easy... One day I can be just like him, I by then I haven't developped parkinsons, or someone else shaves me while I'm in nappies (I'll be 84 in 50 years time)..
I hope to get that proficient before then though..

Max,

It's a really well done video. I don't know about Thiers site but Chimensch posted that in another forum. He admits after showing it to his barber that in some angles he's approaching it looks "dangerous" and that his angles are "wrong". I personally wouldn't call some of those angles wrong as I have my own way of doing it. Just like barbers are trained not to shave patrons ATG due to sensitivity of skin etc...Plus he's got 30 years under his belt. That's more than anyone I know personally.

As a potential straight shaver why is there a need to wipe the blade after a stroke as opposed to just rinsing it under a hot tap as I would a DE?

Some are clumsy and they simply don't want to risk chipping or damaging the blade. My brother tried my method once of running it under tap but he cut himself in process while wiping the sticky lather off. Since then he's used a paper towel to wipe the lather each consecutive pass. I don't think he even rinses the blade under the sink even to clean it from the lather residue but a mere simple wipe. Either that or he doesn't do a good enough job wiping it clean. It's no wonder his kamisori has oxidized. What a waste.

Thanks for the info guys, I hope I can stick with it! (second shave yesterday, pretty good!)

Just a quick update :D

4 straight shaves in the last 4 days, haven't used a DE at all since then.
Things going great, still no DFS, but it's better than day 1, the cuts are smaller/fewer :D

2 Straights are on their way to Neil, and waiting for 2 other straights that are being restored :)

Soon I'll have more straights than DE's, especially since I've sold quite a few DE's on BST!

Thanks guys!

Is that yours Nic? To be honest I don't care for the scales. For the life of me I could swear I've seen this razor but don't remember the scales being pretty pink.
