My recommendation for securing your cloud storage data

Just a brief post initially to recommend Cryptomator as a tool to secure your data which you have saved in the cloud. It runs on your clients to encrypt (and decrypt) your data which is saved with your cloud storage provider of choice.

This means that you control the encryption keys, not your storage provider. It's well maintained and open source.

The desktop version is free. Android and iOS versions are currently 33% off. That's to own, not a subscription model, which I like. You can also get the Android APK if you don't want to be beholden to the Play store - check their tweets for the discount code.

Sorry, I thought it'd be more brief.

@pjgh and @slapo may be interested I think because I saw encrypted cloud storage being discussed in another thread

Neat! Yeah, I've used BoxCryptor before - https://www.boxcryptor.com/en/ which works in much the same way and is cross-platform and mobile friendly. Microsoft OneDrive has a vault but as with all things cryptographic, if you don't own the private key then you're not the owner. VeraCrypt - https://www.veracrypt.fr/code/VeraCrypt/ if I'm being really paranoid.

A lot depends upon who you're protecting your files from ...

Cloud providers like Microsoft and Google, certainly, have a vested interest (advertising) in reading all your files and scouring all your pictures. Apple, less so. Data breaches are a concern and so encrypting is an answer there, but what if the data breach is the encryption partner?

Proton are making some noise about their services now and have expanded from a mail service and VPN into drive storage. That's https://proton.me/ - see Tim Berners-Lee on the team? Yeah, that Tim Berners-Lee ... as in the father of the internet!

Nice post!

I used to use BoxCryptor Classic, but when that was no longer supported I moved to Cryptomator for a few reasons (e.g. filename encryption without paying for a subscription). I recently discovered, from Cryptomator's blog post, that BoxCyptor has sold to Dropbox and are not allowing new accounts. Existing users will have to find another solution too.

Cryptomator is a good solution for cloud storage because you can still use the Microsoft and Google type cloud providers and it protects you from the problems you mentioned (as you seem to be aware).

Veracrypt I see as the gold standard, but for different use-cases.

Coincidentally, this morning I noticed that Proton are again doing a raffle with ten of their lifetime accounts on offer. The money goes to ten different organisations, at least a few of which I'm keen on.

Thank you, I find this quite useful to know about. I really like how they're doing things, e.g. that the android app can be used without the play store. I'm not sure I'll end up using it, I have my setup that I'm happy with (which is somewhat technically convoluted), but this looks excellent, certainly a recommend for less techy family members.

I'm glad it's useful to have been made aware of it. I made the post just in case it would be handy for someone.

I'd be interested to hear about your setup if you feel like describing it, and if it doesn't put your privacy or security at risk. Mind you, if it's convoluted you mightn't want to bother going into it.

Cryptomator is again 33% off, but only until the end of the day (12th). I don't know how they're working it, what with timezones, though.
