My brain hurts!

Any pointers on my choice so far are most welcome, I'm still feeling my way with my whiskers!!

I like EJ cream having used the Aloe Vera one before. Advice I've had as a new straight user is that the quality of lather is even more important than for DE razors. I must say that the soap that has never let me down is good old Palmolive. I haven't tried it with the straight yet but it has always given a great lather for me. Also well worth trying are Nanny's and Tabac to name but two.

Hello and welcome Steve. The Dovo should serve you well: fit and finish can be variable, but the steel and grinding is likely to be good. What stones are you proposing to use for finishing? - and don't forget the strop.

Cheers for the info on that. I usually go up to 6k grit and no further with my knives, although I may invest in a 10k in the longer term if I feel proficient enough. Anyone recommend a decent honing service?

For honing look no further than Neil Miller, author of the straight razor stickies here. You should be looking at getting a finer stone, Steve, 6k is very borderline indeed. If you send a razor to Neil it will typically come back with a 16k edge ...

Legend! Cheers!

16k is an outstanding finish! 6k turns my scandi grind blade into a mirror, but I wouldn't want to shave with it!
