Mug honing a DE blade?

Just been having a chat with my Dad and the topic of saving came up.

He told me my grandad as most men back then used one, and as things were a bit tight money-wise he would stretch every blade for as long as he could, then to stretch it a few more shaves he would put it lengthwise into a mug, then swish it from side to side, turn it over and repeat.

Not something I fancy doing, anyone else heard of it?

A ceramic mug? Probably unglazed on the inside?

Never heard of it before but I don't see why it couldn't be used as a surface for stropping, it would be abrasive enough.

Yes you can although im unsure if it makes much difference.

I have heard of people stropping a blade on the edge of a class or bottle before but not a ceramic mug. I guess hard times make people inventive.

I've seen something like this before. But made out of glass.
