have any of the brethren been to Italy?

am toying with the idea of going over in Feb or March for a trip with the wife to Rome.

will be travelling by train, from St Pancras most likely on an over-nighter.

why the train? well, when it comes to planes i'm Mr T or put another way a big fanny\jessie so it's the train or possibly ferry :?

any advice greatly appreciated, i'll take shopping orders later

I've been to Italy 3 times , twice to just Rome and once to lake Garda.I was married in Rome.
The architecture is amazing , everywhere in Rome. It can be expensive and you need to avoid the tourist traps or
they will seriously rip you off, the shops used by the locals are usually quite cheap.
The food and the wine are so good , again try to get to restaurants the locals use .
We had our wedding meal in a little family run restaurant , handmade pasta , they made their own icecream and it was
so cheap that I thought they had made a mistake!!
The Romans all look so stylish , driving their scooters like maniacs.
I'm not sure when we'll go back again .maybe next year.

I'm not a great traveller. I'm spoilt living in a home and village I love.

But I have been to Rome. What a fabulous place it is! Once in the centre there are such majestic sights to see. And so much within easy walking distance. Any guide book will highlight the obvious places of interest. If at all possible, Rome is the one city, everyone should visit. So evocative! I must post a few pics in the photography forum.

The traffic is a sight to behold!

Don't go it's a complete sh*t hole and your just going to stock up on the rasso AS anyway.

Probably an overnight sleeper from Paris to Rome...a fine way to travel but definitely book a sleeper/couchette, probably TGV now and it will be sweet. Depends how long you have but it might be worth taking in Florence or Bologna along the way.

Italy is our default holiday destination. Been to lots of places but always seem to end up going to Italy when we can't decide where else to go. Love the place. The people don't give a wet slap about anything, the weather's pretty good. It can be expensive in Rome, but then you're visiting a capital city, it's expensive in London too.

I would agree with Tony, if you can get to Florence then please do, one of the most beautiful places I've ever visited.

Avoid restaurants/coffee shops that are on popular squares, you will pay through the nose. We once paid £14 for two ice creams, didn't realise until we were walking away because everything cost a trillion lira in those days and it wasn't until I had supped a few mouthfuls that I did the maths in my head. "Enjoy that ice cream," I told swmbo, "you won't be getting another from that shop". Ahhh but we were young then...

i've been toying with the idea of going to the GP and asking for something that'll either knock me out for the duration of the flight or some kind of happy pill :?

cheapest train fare is £350 ish rtn, and that's before i get to St P

Hello mate
Been a few times via Sleazy-jet, cost more to put the bags through :? Florence is fantastic as is Lake Como and Garda. Milan is worth a day or two, in my opinion not more. Como is simply beautiful. Bond recuperates at Como in Casino Royale. Venice and Milan are within easy travelling from the lakes. If you travel around the Italian train system is very good. Efficient and cheap. If you fancy Florence let me know and I'll put you on to great accommodation in a former convent, good habit to get into, ahem!

thanks lads

rangers,
the only thing i know is the starting point will be Rome as i'm going to sneek the 6 nations game in  travelling around after that is a possibilty though ;)

Gentlemen

We now have a hold over Hando... if Mrs Hando is unaware of the real purpose of the jaunt and say one or more of us knows his address, we could drop Mrs H a line or nine (soaked in Blue Stratos of course) to alert her.... unless certain conditions are met by Mr. Hando.... say 1kg of Cella each

Italy-England is on Valentine's day next year -perfect!!
I would have considered that myself but it's half-term that week and we are going to Italy ...only skiing in the Alps. I'm hoping to watch the rugby in the Hotel when we arrive though. ;)

We went to Italy on holiday this Summer. We flew Easyjet to Rome, had 3 nights in a cheap but clean hotel (a suite with 2 adjoining rooms as we have 3 children). We then picked up a hire car and drove from Rome to a Campsite in Tuscany. It was beautiful. The food was excellent. The sites were excellent (Rome, Florence, Pisa and a few small towns and villages in Tuscany). The Euro exchange rate does make it pricey though.
The trains are excellent in Italy. We used them to go to Florence. Driving wasn't too bad on the country roads. Driving in Rome city centre was one of the scariest things I've done. You just have to drive like the locals and trust other people not to crash in to you ...it seemed to work.

Proraso was dirt cheap in the local supermarket. I didn't see much other shaving stuff.

Paul.
