back to basics it is then, but many people don't like Merkur or Derby blades either so you might want to get a blade sampler pack

but only change one thing at a time, stick to a brand of blade for at least a week, fortnight'd be better.

Yea I have about 20 different brands to try from a sampler pack I have already but Im gonna stick with derbys for the next few weeks to see if I can get a consistant shave
 
I'm new to this too, and also have an insane amount of different direction to my neck hair.
I use very short light strokes and so far so good. My only bad shave was the day I tried a Derby blade.

Gillette Tech, Feather blades and no pressure are so far working fo me and I'm a sensetive skinned bugger too.
